Chapter 4 - The Signature She Never Saw

Hailey’s father arrived forty minutes later.
Charles West entered the maternity recovery room wearing a dark overcoat over a gray suit.
He was sixty-two, tall, silver-haired, and more shaken than Hailey had ever seen him.
For one long second, neither of them spoke.
Then he crossed the room and carefully wrapped his arms around her without touching her incision.
“I’m sorry,” Hailey whispered.
“No.”
His voice broke.
“You have nothing to apologize for.”
He looked at Toby.
His grandson.
The baby he had never been invited to meet.
Charles touched one finger gently to Toby’s tiny hand.
Toby curled his fingers around it.
Charles turned away, fighting tears.
Hailey began crying too.
“I thought you didn’t want me.”
“I thought Jasper was preventing you from speaking to me.”
“Why didn’t you come to the house?”
“I did.”
She stared at him.
“Three times. Gillian told me you had instructed the staff not to let me in.”
Hailey’s grief turned to anger.
Gillian had stood in Hailey’s kitchen and called Charles arrogant for refusing to visit after Toby’s birth.
It had all been a lie.
Charles opened a leather document case.
“I did not come here to overwhelm you. But Jasper knows you called me, and that means he may begin moving money.”
“What money?”
Charles removed a loan agreement.
The signature at the bottom looked like Hailey’s.
It was not.
Two years earlier, Jasper had borrowed twenty-five million dollars to rescue Cole Urban Development after several projects failed.
The bank approved the loan because it was personally guaranteed by Hailey.
“I never signed this.”
“I know.”
“How did you get it?”
“One of Jasper’s former partners brought it to me.”
Charles turned another page.
Attached was a pledge of collateral.
Hailey’s inherited shares in Westfield Logistics.
The shares were worth more than Jasper’s entire company.
She felt suddenly cold.
“Can he take them?”
“Not legally. But if the company defaults and the signature is not challenged immediately, the dispute could freeze your assets for years.”
Hailey looked down at Toby.
Jasper had spent months calling her financially irresponsible because she bought a more expensive crib.
All while risking her inheritance without telling her.
“Why didn’t you report him?”
“I needed you to confirm the signature was forged. Every time I tried to reach you, my calls were blocked.”
Charles handed her his phone.
It contained screenshots of emails he had sent.
Messages asking whether she was safe.
Messages warning her not to sign corporate documents.
Messages begging her to contact an independent attorney.
Every message had been opened.
But not by Hailey.
Someone inside the house had accessed her email account.
Only three people knew her password.
Hailey.
Jasper.
And Gillian, who had insisted on helping manage Hailey’s schedule during the pregnancy.
Hailey looked at Charles.
“They all knew.”
He nodded slowly.
“They needed you isolated until the refinancing closed.”
“When does it close?”
Charles glanced at his watch.
May you like
“Tomorrow morning.”
👉 Hailey had less than twenty-four hours to stop Jasper from using her stolen identity to save the company he valued more than his wife and child.
