Chapter 2 - The Father Jasper Feared

Hailey’s father did not ask why she was crying.
He did not tell her to calm down.
He asked only three questions.
“Are you safe?”
“For now.”
“Is the baby safe?”
“Yes.”
“Did Jasper leave you there?”
Hailey looked toward the traffic light.
The black SUV remained stopped.
Jasper was watching her through the side window.
“Yes,” she whispered.
Her father’s voice changed.
“Stay inside the hospital entrance. Do not get on a bus. Do not go anywhere with him if he comes back.”
Hailey swallowed.
“Dad, I don’t want a scene.”
“This stopped being about appearances when he abandoned you after surgery.”
The light turned green.
Jasper did not immediately move.
A car honked behind him.
He finally drove away.
Hailey’s knees weakened with relief and grief at the same time.
She stepped toward a concrete bench but could not lower herself without pulling at her incision.
A hospital volunteer noticed and rushed over.
“Ma’am, are you all right?”
Hailey tried to answer.
Instead, her vision blurred.
The volunteer caught her elbow while another employee brought a wheelchair.
Toby stirred against her chest.
Hailey tightened her hold.
“I have him,” she said quickly. “Don’t take him.”
“No one is taking your baby.”
The words nearly broke her.
Inside the hospital lobby, a nurse recognized her from the maternity floor.
“Mrs. Cole? Why are you still here?”
“My ride left.”
The nurse looked toward the glass doors.
“With your belongings?”
Hailey glanced down at the cash in her fist.
“With everything.”
The nurse’s expression hardened.
She took Hailey back toward the maternity unit and called the attending physician.
Hailey’s blood pressure was elevated.
Her incision had begun bleeding slightly beneath the dressing from the strain of standing outside.
The doctor ordered her readmitted for observation.
As Hailey was helped into bed, Jasper called.
She stared at his name on the screen.
Her father’s voice remained on the other line.
“Don’t answer yet.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to know exactly what he thinks he can still control.”
Hailey looked down at Toby.
For years, she had defended Jasper.
She had told her father that Jasper was proud, not cruel.
Driven, not selfish.
Protective of his family, not controlled by them.
Now she pressed the button to merge the calls.
Jasper’s voice came through immediately.
“Did you get on the bus?”
Hailey said nothing.
His tone sharpened.
“Hailey, answer me.”
Her father listened silently.
Jasper continued.
“My mother is already upset. Don’t make this more embarrassing than it needs to be.”
Hailey stared at the fresh blood spreading beneath the edge of her dressing.
Then her father spoke.
“Jasper.”
The silence on the call was instant.
Jasper knew that voice.
“Mr. West,” he said carefully.

Hailey’s father replied, “You have exactly one opportunity to explain why my daughter and grandson were left outside a hospital.”
👉 Jasper had spent years convincing everyone Hailey’s father wanted nothing to do with her—but his frightened silence revealed that the truth was very different.
