Chapter 10 - The Accident That Never Happened

The policy application on Thomas Bennett was for $5 million.
Julian’s company was listed as the beneficiary.
The application claimed Thomas was a key financial adviser whose death would damage the business.
Thomas had never worked for Julian.
His signature was forged.
The policy had not yet been approved, but Julian had already submitted supporting documents.
Among them was a travel schedule detailing Thomas’s regular drives between Connecticut and Boston.
Audrey’s fear became immediate.
“They were tracking you.”
Thomas remained calm.
“That explains the car.”
“What car?”
For three weeks, a black SUV had followed Thomas during evening drives.
He assumed it belonged to a private investigator.
Then his brake warning light appeared.
A mechanic discovered one brake line had been partially cut.
The damage had not yet caused failure.
Thomas reported it, but there was no proof connecting it to Julian.
Now there was motive.
Megan’s files included a payment to an automotive shop owned by Eleanor’s security manager.
Investigators searched the business.
They found Thomas’s license plate number written beside a date.
The date was two days after Audrey was scheduled to move into Eleanor’s mansion.
The plan became clear.
First, Audrey would be isolated.
Then Julian would seek control over her finances through the competency petition.
If Thomas challenged them, he would suffer a fatal accident.
If Audrey continued resisting, the life insurance policy offered another solution.
Audrey felt responsible.
“They targeted you because I called.”
Thomas took her hand.
“They targeted me because I stood between them and your money.”
“I should have left sooner.”
“You left when you could.”
“I defended Julian for years.”
“That is what abusers train people to do.”
Audrey looked away.
She remembered every dinner when Thomas asked whether she was happy.
Every holiday invitation she declined because Julian said her father disrespected him.
Every time Thomas called and Audrey let it go to voicemail.
Julian had not isolated her in one dramatic act.
He had done it through hundreds of small choices.
A complaint after every phone call.
A cruel joke about her family.
A fight before every visit.
Eventually, silence felt easier.
Thomas did not ask her to apologize.
He simply stayed.
That afternoon, prosecutors expanded the investigation to include conspiracy, insurance fraud, kidnapping, evidence tampering, and attempted assault against Thomas.
Eleanor was arrested at her home.
She walked past cameras wearing dark glasses and a cream coat.
She told reporters Audrey was a manipulative liar destroying a respected family.
Even in handcuffs, she acted superior.
But inside the courthouse, Eleanor’s confidence weakened when prosecutors mentioned Megan.
Then they mentioned the automotive shop.
Finally, they played a short section of Audrey’s hidden recording.
Eleanor’s own voice filled the room:
“If Thomas interferes, we handle him next.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.
👉 The mother who had controlled everyone around her was finally cornered—but she still possessed one secret capable of turning Audrey against her father.
