Chapter 2 - The Night She Stopped Pretending

Three hours earlier, Audrey had been standing in the master bathroom holding a makeup sponge.
Julian had left a foundation bottle beside the sink.
“Cover your eye before breakfast,” he said from the bedroom.
Audrey stared at herself in the mirror.
The discoloration beneath her eye had spread overnight. There was swelling along her cheek where Julian had struck her with the back of his hand after she asked about a missing bank statement.
He had apologized ten minutes later.
Then he blamed her.
“You know how stressed I am,” he said. “Why do you keep pushing me?”
Audrey had covered the injuries before.
She had worn long sleeves in summer.
She had told friends she slipped while cleaning.
She had canceled lunches because Julian did not like the way certain people looked at her.
But that morning, she left the makeup untouched.
She walked downstairs with every mark visible.
Julian and Eleanor were waiting in the dining room.
A silver breakfast service gleamed beneath the chandelier.
Eleanor looked at Audrey’s face and frowned.
“You could have made an effort.”
Audrey sat across from them.
“I’m not moving into your house.”
Julian lowered his coffee cup.
They had been planning to sell the mansion—or so Audrey had been told. Eleanor claimed Julian’s business needed temporary financial restructuring and insisted the couple move into her estate for six months.
Audrey refused because Eleanor’s house had security cameras in every hallway.
Julian controlled the passwords.
Audrey would never be alone.
“You already agreed,” Julian said.
“No. You agreed for me.”
Eleanor’s mouth tightened.
“This family has supported you long enough.”
Audrey almost laughed.
She had paid the down payment on the mansion using money her grandmother left her.
Her salary had covered most household expenses while Julian claimed his consulting firm was growing.
Yet he and Eleanor spoke as if she were a burden.
Julian slid a document across the table.
“Sign it.”
Audrey read only the first page before her stomach turned.
It authorized Julian to manage all marital and inherited assets during their move.
“I’m not signing this.”
“It’s temporary.”
“It gives you power over my trust.”
Julian reached across the table and took her wrist.
His fingers tightened.
“Sign it.”
Audrey looked at Eleanor.
The older woman calmly buttered her toast.
That was the moment Audrey understood.
Eleanor knew exactly what was happening.
Audrey pulled her wrist free.
“I’m leaving.”
Julian’s chair scraped across the floor.
“You are not walking out of this house.”
Audrey stood.
“I already packed.”
His confidence flickered.
He had not known about the suitcase hidden in the laundry room.
He also did not know Audrey had placed a second phone behind the flowers on the kitchen counter.
