Chapter 4 - The Call Julian Regretted

Julian called the police after Audrey carried her suitcase toward the front door.

He told the dispatcher his wife was unstable.

He claimed she was taking valuable property and threatening to harm herself.

Audrey heard every word.

She stood silently in the entrance hall with one hand on the rolling suitcase.

Eleanor waited near the stairs.

“You’ve embarrassed him enough,” she said.

Audrey looked toward the open kitchen where the second phone remained hidden behind a vase of white flowers.

“I’m leaving with my clothing.”

“You are leaving with family property.”

“My underwear belongs to the family now?”

Eleanor’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t be vulgar.”

Julian ended the call and blocked the door.

“You’ll stay until the officers decide whether you’re safe.”

Audrey understood his plan.

He wanted the police to see a bruised woman wearing very little and believe she was having a breakdown.

He had already hidden her wallet.

He had removed the battery from her car key.

And he had placed several prescription bottles on the bedroom dresser—medications prescribed to Eleanor, not Audrey.

When the officers arrived, Julian greeted them calmly.

“My wife is having some kind of episode.”

Audrey stepped into view.

Both officers noticed her injuries immediately.

Officer One looked at Julian.

“What happened to her face?”

“She fell in the shower.”

Audrey said nothing.

Julian’s eyes warned her to agree.

Officer Two approached her carefully.

“Ma’am, do you need medical assistance?”

“Yes.”

Julian interrupted.

“She’s being dramatic.”

The officer turned toward him.

“I asked her.”

Audrey’s voice shook.

“I need to leave this house.”

Officer One asked whether Julian had hurt her.

Before Audrey could answer, Eleanor stepped forward.

“My daughter-in-law has always been emotionally fragile.”

Audrey looked directly at the officers.

“My husband hit me last night.”

Julian laughed.

“That’s not true.”

“He forged my name on financial documents.”

Now Eleanor spoke sharply.

“That is a private marital matter.”

The officers exchanged a glance.

Julian realized the conversation was moving beyond his control.

He lowered his voice.

“Audrey, stop. Come upstairs and get dressed.”

“No.”

“You’re not going outside like that.”

“You refused to let me dress.”

“That’s a lie.”

Audrey gripped the suitcase and walked through the open doors.

Sunlight struck her uncovered injuries.

For the first time, Julian’s carefully controlled private cruelty became visible in public.

He followed her onto the steps.

The officers moved between them.

Then Julian saw the black sedan waiting near the curb.

His face tightened.

“Who did you call?”

Audrey kept walking.

Julian tore free.

And the slap that followed destroyed the final version of his cover story.

👉 The officers had witnessed the assault—but Audrey’s father had recorded an even more damaging confession before arriving.
