Chapter 14 - The Courtroom Silence
The trial began eight months later.
Audrey entered the courthouse wearing a navy suit.
The bruises were gone.
The scars remained in places no camera could capture.
Eleanor sat at the defense table beside Julian.
Their attorneys had attempted to separate the cases, but prosecutors argued the crimes formed one continuous conspiracy.
Megan testified first.
She explained how Julian ordered her to copy Audrey’s signature and how Eleanor threatened her family.
Charles Merrick testified after receiving a reduced sentence.
He described offshore accounts, false companies, and Eleanor’s instructions to destroy financial records.
The doctor admitted he signed Audrey’s competency evaluation in exchange for consulting payments.
The security manager confessed to following Thomas and arranging the brake-line damage.
Then the officers from the mansion described the slap.
Officer One said Julian showed no hesitation.
Officer Two said Eleanor blamed Audrey before asking whether she needed medical help.
The hidden phone recording played last.
Julian’s voice filled the courtroom.
“You belong to me.”
Then Eleanor’s voice:
“Once she is inside my house, no one will believe anything she says.”
Another section played.
Julian asked, “What if she keeps refusing?”
Eleanor answered, “Then the policy exists for a reason.”
No one in the jury looked at Eleanor.
They looked at Audrey.
She took the witness stand.
Julian’s attorney tried to make her seem calculating.
“You secretly recorded your husband, correct?”
“Yes.”
“You packed before police arrived?”
“Yes.”
“You contacted your father without informing Julian?”
“Yes.”
“So this confrontation was planned.”
“My escape was planned.”
The courtroom went still.
Audrey continued.
“I planned because leaving without preparation could have gotten me killed.”
Eleanor’s attorney suggested Audrey wanted revenge for her mother’s death.
Audrey looked directly at Eleanor.
“I wanted the truth. Revenge would have meant becoming like her.”
Thomas testified about Caroline’s evidence.
The jury heard Eleanor threaten Caroline.
They saw the payment made after the boat was sabotaged.
Eleanor finally lost control.
She stood and shouted that Caroline had tried to destroy everything her family built.
The judge ordered her seated.
Eleanor pointed at Audrey.
“You would have had nothing without us!”
Audrey answered from the witness stand.
“I had a life before your son entered it.”
The jury deliberated for less than six hours.
Julian was convicted of domestic assault, financial fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, attempted insurance fraud, evidence tampering, and participation in the plot against Thomas.
Eleanor was convicted on every major count, including conspiracy connected to Caroline’s death.
When the verdicts were read, Julian cried.
Eleanor remained rigid until officers placed handcuffs around her wrists.
Then she looked at Audrey and whispered:
“You destroyed my family.”
Audrey shook her head.
