Chapter 11 - The Secret About Audrey’s Inheritance
Eleanor requested a private meeting with Audrey.
Audrey refused.
Then Eleanor sent a message through her attorney.
Ask your father why your grandmother changed the trust.
Audrey showed Thomas.
For the first time since arriving at the mansion, he looked uncertain.
“What does she mean?” Audrey asked.
Thomas sat across from her in the hospital family room.
“Your grandmother originally planned to divide the estate between you and your mother.”
Audrey’s mother, Caroline, had died when Audrey was sixteen.
The official story was a boating accident during a storm.
After Caroline’s death, Audrey inherited the entire trust at age twenty-five.
Thomas had managed it until Audrey took control.
“Why would Eleanor know about the original documents?” Audrey asked.
Thomas exhaled slowly.
“Because your mother knew Eleanor in college.”
Audrey stared at him.
Thomas explained that Caroline and Eleanor had been close friends before either woman married.
Caroline later discovered Eleanor was using family charitable organizations to hide money.
She ended the friendship.
Years later, Caroline threatened to expose Eleanor after learning the same financial network had expanded.
Shortly afterward, Caroline died.
Audrey felt the room shift.
“Are you saying Eleanor killed Mom?”
“I have never been able to prove it.”
“You told me it was an accident.”
“That was the official finding.”
“What do you believe?”
Thomas’s voice broke for the first time.
“I believe someone tampered with the boat.”
Audrey stood too quickly.
Pain moved through her ribs.
“You knew Eleanor might be responsible, and you let me marry Julian?”
“I did not know Julian was her son until you introduced him.”
“You could have warned me.”
“I tried.”
“No. You criticized him. You questioned his business. You never told me my mother had investigated Eleanor.”
“Caroline made me promise not to involve you unless I had proof.”
“She was dead!”
Thomas lowered his eyes.
“I was afraid Eleanor would target you if she knew Caroline left evidence behind.”
Audrey froze.
“What evidence?”
Thomas had kept one of Caroline’s journals inside a secure deposit box.
The journal documented suspicious transfers involving Eleanor’s family foundations.
It also mentioned a private account identified by four numbers.
Thomas never located the account.
Audrey suddenly remembered Julian asking about her mother’s belongings.
He claimed he wanted photographs for an anniversary gift.
He searched boxes in Thomas’s attic.
At the time, Audrey thought it was thoughtful.
Now she understood.
Julian had married her partly to find Caroline’s missing evidence.
The inheritance was only one motive.
The Whitmores feared Audrey might unknowingly possess proof of crimes committed years earlier.
Eleanor had offered Audrey the secret to divide her from Thomas.
For several painful hours, it worked.
Then Audrey remembered what Julian had said on the recording.
