Chapter 5 - The Phone Behind the Flowers
Audrey’s father, Thomas Bennett, did not drive directly to the mansion after their first phone call.
Thomas had spent thirty-four years investigating financial fraud for major insurance companies and federal prosecutors.
He knew that discovering a forged signature was only the beginning.
He needed to understand what Julian had done with it.
Audrey photographed every suspicious document she could find.
She sent the images through an encrypted account Julian did not know existed.
Thomas traced the loan.
Then he found three more.
Julian had used Audrey’s identity to guarantee nearly $7 million in business debt.
Two loans had been routed through shell companies connected to Eleanor.
One company supposedly purchased medical office properties.
Another claimed to operate luxury rehabilitation centers.
Neither conducted real business.
The borrowed money had been transferred into accounts controlled by Julian and his mother.
Then Thomas found something worse.
A life insurance policy had been purchased on Audrey eighteen months earlier.
The benefit was $10 million.
Julian was the primary beneficiary.
Eleanor’s family trust was listed as the backup beneficiary.
Audrey had never signed the application.
Thomas contacted a former colleague in the state financial crimes unit.
The colleague warned him not to confront Julian until they had original documents and a clear recording.
So Audrey created two sets of evidence.
The first was the second phone hidden behind the kitchen flowers.
The second was the sealed folder Thomas carried to the mansion.
Inside were certified copies of the forged loans, the insurance application, and a court petition requesting emergency protection over Audrey’s assets.
Thomas also discovered that Julian had tried to have Audrey declared financially incompetent.
The petition claimed she suffered delusions, impulsive spending, and episodes of confusion.
Eleanor had signed a supporting statement.
A doctor affiliated with one of Eleanor’s false rehabilitation companies provided an evaluation without ever examining Audrey.
If the petition succeeded, Julian could gain legal control of Audrey’s inheritance.
That was why Eleanor wanted Audrey moved into her estate.
They planned to isolate her while the court case proceeded.
Thomas reached the driveway minutes before Audrey came outside.
He received a live audio stream from the hidden phone through a secure link.
He heard Julian demand her signature.
He heard Eleanor threaten to have Audrey committed.
He heard Julian say:
“If she keeps fighting, we use the policy and solve the problem permanently.”
Thomas remained beside the car because police were already inside.
He knew appearing too early might make Julian stop talking.
Then he heard the front doors open.
He saw his daughter step into the sunlight, barefoot and bruised.
When Julian struck her in front of police, Thomas nearly lost control.
But rage would not protect Audrey.
Evidence would.
He raised the phone and walked forward.
“I heard everything.”
