Chapter 7 - Eleanor’s Private Banker

Audrey went to the hospital with her father.

Doctors documented the swelling around her eye, the healing split in her lip, bruises along her ribs, and finger-shaped marks around her wrist.

None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Together, however, they told a story Julian could not dismiss as one accident.

A domestic violence advocate photographed Audrey’s injuries and helped her request an emergency restraining order.

Thomas remained in the hallway speaking with investigators.

The hidden phone had captured nearly fifty minutes of audio.

But the most important financial records were stored on computers inside Julian’s consulting office.

By the time police requested a warrant, Eleanor’s private banker had already received instructions to close three accounts.

His name was Charles Merrick.

Merrick had handled Eleanor’s finances for twenty years.

He transferred nearly $4 million to an offshore account within forty minutes of Julian’s arrest.

Then he attempted to delete the transaction history.

He did not know Thomas had already traced the account numbers.

Financial investigators froze the transfer before it cleared.

Eleanor called the hospital.

Audrey stared at the ringing phone.

Thomas said, “You don’t have to answer.”

Audrey pressed the speaker button.

Eleanor’s voice was soft.

“Audrey, this has gone far enough.”

“My face says otherwise.”

“Julian made a mistake.”

“He hit me in front of police.”

“He was frightened.”

“Of what?”

Eleanor paused.

Then she changed tactics.

“You have no idea how complicated the financial situation is. Julian was trying to protect both of you.”

“By forging my name?”

“Your inheritance was sitting unused while his company needed liquidity.”

“It was mine.”

“You became part of our family. Families share.”

Audrey looked at her father.

Thomas silently signaled for her to continue.

“What happens if I refuse to drop the charges?” Audrey asked.

Eleanor’s voice became colder.

“The police may believe you today. A family court may not.”

“You planned to call me mentally unstable.”

“We have doctors prepared to testify.”

“Doctors who never examined me?”

“They will explain that your behavior has been deteriorating.”

Audrey’s fingers tightened around the phone.

Eleanor continued.

“You left the house half-dressed. You staged a public scene. You secretly recorded your husband. Does that sound stable?”

Audrey almost believed her.

That was Eleanor’s gift.

She could turn survival into evidence of madness.

Then Thomas wrote three words on a hospital notepad.

ASK ABOUT POLICY.

Audrey took a breath.

“Why did Julian insure my life?”

Eleanor went silent.

When she answered, her voice had changed.

“Every married couple needs protection.”

“Julian said the policy could solve the problem permanently.”

“That is not what he meant.”

“What did he mean?”

The call ended.

Thomas saved the recording.

Eleanor had denied nothing.
