Chapter 1 - The Boy Beneath the Table

“That boy eats on the floor.”

Noelle’s voice cut through the marble foyer like a knife.

Madeline stood frozen beside her cream suitcase, one hand covering her mouth, the other trembling around the leather handle.

Four-year-old Liam sat beneath the edge of the dining table.

Barefoot.

Covered in mud.

His thin fingers clutched a dirty plastic dump truck while crumbs were scattered beside him on the polished floor.

Several feet away, Noelle held a spotless baby girl against her pink designer dress. She turned the infant’s face away from Liam as though he carried some terrible disease.

Madeline’s suitcase slipped from her hand.

It struck the marble with a heavy thud.

In the adjoining sitting room, her husband, Jeffrey, lowered his phone.

Beside him sat Cynthia—his beautiful young assistant—wearing an ivory dress and one hand resting possessively on his shoulder.

Jeffrey stood too quickly.

“You weren’t supposed to be back until Friday.”

Madeline barely heard him.

Her eyes remained on Liam.

Her son looked smaller than he had six weeks ago. His cheeks were hollow. There was dirt along his jaw, a bruise-colored shadow beneath one eye, and fear in the way he held his body completely still.

“Keep him away from the baby,” Jeffrey said.

Madeline finally looked at him.

“The baby?”

Cynthia rose and smoothed her dress.

“He ruins this house,” she said with a thin smile. “Look at this floor.”

Madeline’s lips trembled.

But she did not scream.

She did not rush toward Jeffrey.

She slowly lowered herself to one knee several feet from Liam.

“Sweetheart,” she whispered.

Liam recoiled.

That tiny movement broke something inside her.

Madeline reached into her handbag and removed her phone.

Jeffrey stepped forward.

“What are you doing?”

She pressed the recording button and placed the phone face-up on the marble.

Then she looked at all three adults.

“Say it again.”

Noelle’s confidence flickered.

Cynthia’s smile disappeared.

Jeffrey stared at the glowing phone as though it were a loaded weapon.

Madeline slid it toward his polished shoe.

“Now make it public.”

The phone suddenly vibrated with an incoming call.

Jeffrey glanced at the hidden caller’s name—and every trace of color drained from his face.

👉 The caller was someone Jeffrey had spent years making sure Madeline would never speak to again.
