Chapter 2 - The Call He Feared

Jeffrey bent toward the phone.
“Don’t answer that.”
Madeline’s gaze sharpened.
He had not asked who was calling.
He already knew.
She picked up the phone and stepped between Liam and the others.
“Madeline speaking.”
A deep male voice came through the speaker.
“Are you inside the Buckhead house?”
“Yes.”
“Is the child with you?”
Madeline looked at Liam.
“Yes.”
There was a pause.
“Do not leave without documenting everything.”
Jeffrey’s jaw tightened.
“Hang up.”
Madeline ignored him.
The caller continued.
“The emergency petition is ready. But we need proof that the situation is current.”
Noelle’s pearls shifted as she swallowed.
Cynthia looked from Jeffrey to Madeline.
“What petition?” she demanded.
Madeline ended the call without answering.
For six weeks, she had been in Boston caring for her father after heart surgery. Jeffrey had insisted Liam remain in Atlanta because of preschool, routine, and stability.
Every night, Jeffrey had placed Liam briefly on video.
The camera was always close to his face.
The lights were always dim.
And Jeffrey always ended the calls quickly.
“He’s tired.”
“He already ate.”
“He doesn’t want to talk.”
Madeline had believed her husband.
She had also believed the $50,000 she transferred each month covered Liam’s care, household expenses, therapy, and Noelle’s help.
Now she saw her son sitting in mud beneath a table while a clean baby was treated like royalty.
“Whose child is that?” Madeline asked.
No one answered.
The infant made a soft sound.
Cynthia moved instinctively closer to Jeffrey.
Madeline noticed.
So did Noelle.
Madeline’s eyes shifted to Cynthia’s hand.
A diamond ring flashed on her finger.
It was not an engagement ring.
It was Madeline’s missing anniversary ring.
The one Jeffrey had claimed was locked in the bank safe.
Cynthia quickly lowered her hand.
Madeline rose slowly.
“Liam,” she said gently, “Mommy is here.”
The boy’s mouth opened.
No sound came out.
Then his eyes flicked toward the hallway.
Not toward Jeffrey.
Not toward Noelle.
Toward a narrow locked door near the kitchen.
Madeline followed his gaze.
“What’s behind that door?”
Noelle moved immediately.
“Nothing.”
It was the fastest answer anyone had given.
Madeline took one step toward it.
Jeffrey blocked her path.
“You don’t live here anymore,” he said.
The room went silent.
Madeline stared at him.
Then at Cynthia.
Then at the baby.

And suddenly, she understood that the locked door was not the only secret waiting inside her own home.
👉 Jeffrey had just revealed the betrayal—but the papers proving how long it had been planned were hidden behind that locked door.
