Chapter 6 - The Company He Couldn’t Steal

Jeffrey paced across the foyer.
“You’re trying to scare everyone.”
Madeline closed the laptop.
“No. I’m trying to understand how stupid you are.”
Cynthia stared at her.
“You signed the shares over.”
“I signed documents you placed in front of me while my father was recovering from heart surgery.”
“That’s still legal,” Jeffrey said.
“Not if you lied about what they were.”
He smiled again, though sweat had formed near his hairline.
“You’ll never prove that.”
Madeline glanced at the active recording phone.
“You keep helping.”
Noelle stepped forward.
“This marriage can still end privately.”
Madeline looked at her.
“You made my son sleep in a closet.”
“He needed discipline.”
“You gave his bedroom to your son’s mistress.”
“Ava is family.”
“So is Liam.”
Noelle’s expression sharpened.
“Liam is not a Williams.”
The room became completely silent.
Jeffrey closed his eyes.
Cynthia looked confused.
Madeline rose.
“What did you say?”
Noelle lifted her chin.
“I said he isn’t one of us.”
“That isn’t what you said.”
Jeffrey grabbed his mother’s arm.
“Stop.”
Madeline’s heart pounded.
For months after Liam’s birth, Noelle had questioned his appearance.
She had joked that his brown eyes did not resemble Jeffrey’s.
Jeffrey had always told Madeline to ignore her.
Now Madeline understood that Noelle had built her cruelty around a belief.
“You think Liam isn’t Jeffrey’s son.”
Noelle did not answer.
Cynthia laughed softly.
“That explains a lot.”
Madeline turned on her.
“Do not speak about my child.”
Jeffrey stepped closer.
“There was a test.”
Madeline stared at him.
“What test?”
“My mother arranged it.”
Noelle snapped, “You agreed.”
Jeffrey’s face twisted.
“It said Liam wasn’t mine.”
The floor seemed to tilt.
Madeline remembered the hospital.
The fertility treatments.
The years of disappointment.
The night Jeffrey cried while holding their newborn son.
“You tested him without my permission?”
“You were always traveling,” Noelle said. “We needed the truth.”
“And you punished a four-year-old because of a secret test?”
Noelle’s silence was an answer.
Madeline’s fear turned into something colder.
“Where is the report?”
Jeffrey glanced toward the office.
Cynthia noticed.
So did Madeline.
She walked toward the office door.
Jeffrey followed.
“You don’t need to see it.”
Madeline opened the desk drawer and found a sealed medical envelope beneath a stack of corporate papers.
She pulled out the report.
The result read: Probability of Paternity—0%.
Then she noticed the name printed at the top.

The child tested was not Liam.
👉 Someone had switched the DNA sample—and the name on the laboratory chain-of-custody form pointed directly to Noelle.
