Chapter 10 - The Messages on His Phone
Cynthia looked down at the phone in her hand.
The screen displayed a string of messages between her and Jeffrey.
She had entered his passcode to reach the security app.
Instead, the messaging window opened.
Noelle saw the first line.
Make sure Liam looks unstable when Madeline returns.
Cynthia’s face drained.
“I didn’t write that.”
Jeffrey lunged for the phone.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Don’t touch it.”
The police entered moments later.
Two officers assessed the room while Ms. Harris explained the situation.
Cynthia began speaking rapidly.
“Jeffrey told me Liam was dangerous. He said Madeline had abandoned them.”
“You lived in her house,” Rosa said.
Cynthia’s voice cracked.
“He said it would become ours.”
Madeline took the phone only after an officer instructed Cynthia to place it on the table.
The messages went back eleven months.
Jeffrey had complained about Madeline’s devotion to Liam.
Noelle had pressured him to have another child.
Cynthia had become pregnant.
Then Jeffrey began planning the takeover.
He promised Cynthia a title in the company, the mansion, and Madeline’s jewelry.
But one message stood out.
NOELLE: The boy is the obstacle. If Madeline loses custody, the trust can be challenged.
Madeline looked at Daniel.
“Can it?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“Your father’s trust names Liam as successor beneficiary.”
The room went silent.
Jeffrey had not merely wanted a divorce.
He needed Liam removed because the child stood between him and the Carter fortune.
If Madeline were declared unstable and Liam were placed in residential care, Jeffrey planned to argue that the trust should be managed by Madeline’s spouse.
Noelle’s cruelty had been financial.
Cynthia’s jealousy had been useful.
And Jeffrey had used both women to create a false picture of an unfit mother and a troubled child.
Madeline scrolled further.
A video appeared.
Jeffrey had recorded himself rehearsing a statement.
“Madeline disappeared during a family crisis. I had no choice but to protect both children.”
Both children.
He intended to present Ava as the innocent daughter he had bravely chosen to protect.
Liam would be erased.
Madeline set down the phone.
Jeffrey’s voice softened.
“I made mistakes.”
“No,” she said. “You made plans.”
One officer asked Jeffrey to step aside for questioning.
He refused.
“This is a family matter.”
The officer looked toward the storage room.
“Not anymore.”
Jeffrey’s control finally snapped.
He pointed at Madeline.
“She caused all of this! She was never home. She cared more about that company than her family.”
Liam began trembling.
Madeline covered his ears.
Then Daniel placed one final envelope on the table.
