Chapter 8 - The Trust No One Read

Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
He entered through the arched doors carrying a black legal case and accompanied by a child welfare investigator named Ms. Harris.
Jeffrey moved toward the entrance.
“You can’t bring strangers into my house.”
Madeline answered before Daniel could.
“This is my house.”
Jeffrey laughed.
“Not according to the transfer documents.”
Daniel placed the case on the dining table.
“Those documents do not transfer the property.”
Cynthia looked at Jeffrey.
“You said everything was finished.”
“It is.”
Daniel opened the case and removed a thick blue folder.
“Madeline purchased this mansion through the Carter Family Trust three years before the marriage. Jeffrey has no ownership interest.”
Noelle’s lips parted.
Daniel continued.
“The operating company is also held by the trust.”
Jeffrey shook his head.
“Madeline owns controlling shares.”
“She manages them,” Daniel said. “She does not own them personally.”
Madeline had known the company was protected after her father nearly lost it during a previous lawsuit.
What she had not known was that her father had quietly made Daniel co-trustee before surgery.
That was why Daniel had called.
That was why Jeffrey had been terrified.
Any transfer required both trustees’ approval.
Madeline’s signature alone meant nothing.
Cynthia turned on Jeffrey.
“You told me I would be vice president.”
Jeffrey lowered his voice.
“You will be.”
“No,” Daniel said. “You won’t.”
He placed another document on the table.
“Jeffrey attempted to sell trust property using falsified authorization. That triggered an automatic fraud review.”
Noelle looked toward the front door as though considering escape.
Ms. Harris approached Liam carefully.
“May I speak with him?”
Madeline knelt beside her son.
“You don’t have to say anything you don’t want to say.”
Liam looked at her for a long time.
Then he whispered, “Will Daddy get mad?”
Madeline’s chest tightened.
“No one is allowed to hurt you for telling the truth.”
Liam looked at Ms. Harris.
“Grandma said Mommy didn’t want me.”
Madeline closed her eyes.
Jeffrey looked away.
Noelle stiffened.
“That is not what I said.”
Liam’s small voice continued.
“She said Mommy got a new family in Boston.”
Madeline reached toward him but stopped before touching.
Liam moved first.
He crawled into her arms.
It was the first time he had allowed her to hold him.
Madeline pressed her cheek to his hair and silently cried.
Then Liam whispered one more thing.

“Daddy said I had to disappear before Friday.”
👉 Friday was the day Jeffrey planned to announce his new family—and Liam had heard exactly where they intended to send him.
