Chapter 13 - The Man Behind Every Lie

Cynthia opened a hidden audio file on Jeffrey’s phone.
His voice filled the room.
Once Madeline signs, Cynthia is temporary. My mother can raise the baby. I’ll sell the company, move the money offshore, and leave Atlanta.
Cynthia stopped breathing.
Noelle stared at her son.
“You said Ava would live with us.”
Jeffrey said nothing.
The recording continued.
Liam goes to the facility. Madeline will be too broke to fight. Cynthia thinks she’ll become my wife, but she’s a liability.
Cynthia’s face collapsed.
Noelle looked older in an instant.
Jeffrey had manipulated all of them.
But Madeline felt no sympathy for the adults.
They had each chosen cruelty because they believed they would benefit.
The officers asked Jeffrey to turn around.
He resisted.
“This is ridiculous.”
One officer calmly repeated the instruction.
Jeffrey looked at Madeline.
For the first time, there was fear in his eyes.
Not regret.
Fear.
“You’re really going to destroy me?”
Madeline held Liam closer.
“You destroyed yourself.”
Jeffrey was handcuffed on suspicion of fraud, forgery, child endangerment, and evidence tampering.
Noelle was not immediately arrested, but officers informed her she would be questioned and ordered her not to leave the state.
She tried to approach Liam.
“My sweet boy—”
Liam recoiled so sharply that Madeline stepped between them.
“No.”
Noelle’s face twisted.
“I am his grandmother.”
“You stopped earning that title when you locked him in a room.”
Noelle looked around the mansion.
The chandelier.
The staircase.
The flowers.
Everything she had treated as her kingdom.
“This house is my home.”
Daniel answered.
“You have one hour to gather essential belongings. After that, you must leave.”
Noelle’s mouth fell open.
“You can’t throw me out.”
Madeline’s voice stayed calm.
“I can. And I am.”
Cynthia remained seated with Ava.
“I have nowhere to go.”
Madeline studied her.
Cynthia had slept in Madeline’s bed.
Worn her ring.
Mocked her son.
No apology could erase that.
But Ava needed stability.
Ms. Harris arranged for Cynthia and the baby to stay temporarily with Cynthia’s older sister under supervision.
Before leaving, Cynthia stopped beside Madeline.
“I’m sorry.”
Madeline looked at her.
“You’re sorry because the plan failed.”
Cynthia lowered her eyes.
Madeline continued.
“One day, be sorry because of what you did to Liam.”
Cynthia nodded through tears.
When the front doors finally closed behind them, the mansion became silent.
Liam still clung to Madeline.
She carried him upstairs.
His old bedroom had become Ava’s nursery.
But one object remained hidden behind the crib.

A small wooden box marked MOMMY.
👉 Inside the box were dozens of letters Liam had written to Madeline—letters Jeffrey had never allowed her to see.
