Chapter 5 - The Housekeeper’s Copy

Rosa placed the memory card in Madeline’s palm.

Jeffrey’s voice dropped.

“Give that to me.”

“No.”

“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”

Rosa looked him directly in the eyes.

“I did not sign an agreement to watch a child be abused.”

Noelle gasped.

“Abused? We gave him food and shelter.”

Rosa pointed toward the storage room.

“You gave the dog a better bed.”

Liam flinched at the raised voices.

Madeline immediately lowered her tone.

“Rosa, take him into the sunroom. Stay where I can see you.”

Rosa nodded and approached Liam slowly.

She did not touch him until he reached for her hand.

That small act told Madeline everything.

Her son trusted the housekeeper more than his own father.

Jeffrey watched them leave.

“This is being exaggerated.”

Madeline removed her laptop from the suitcase and inserted the memory card.

A folder appeared.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Short videos.

The first clip showed Noelle taking a plate from Liam and placing it on the floor.

“If you behave like an animal, you eat like one.”

The second showed Cynthia carrying boxes into Madeline’s bedroom.

The third showed Jeffrey speaking to a man in a dark suit.

“She’s in Boston and distracted. Once the board approves the transfer, she’ll have no income and no leverage in the divorce.”

Madeline paused the video.

Jeffrey’s confidence vanished.

“You recorded private business conversations?” he shouted at Rosa.

Rosa shook her head.

“The security system did.”

Madeline looked up.

Jeffrey had told her the mansion cameras were disabled during renovations.

They were not.

Someone had redirected the recordings.

“Who is the man?” Madeline asked.

Jeffrey remained silent.

She played the next clip.

The man handed Jeffrey a folder.

“We still need her electronic signature.”

Jeffrey answered, “I have access to her tablet.”

Madeline felt cold.

Her father’s surgery had left her exhausted.

Jeffrey had brought documents to Boston, claiming they were insurance renewals and payroll approvals.

She had signed several pages without reading every line.

“What did you make me sign?”

“Routine paperwork.”

“Then you won’t mind if I send this to my attorney.”

Cynthia stepped forward.

“You don’t own the company anymore.”

Jeffrey turned toward her in panic.

Cynthia realized too late that she had spoken.

Madeline leaned back in her chair.

“How would you know?”

Cynthia’s face hardened.

“Because Jeffrey promised it to me.”

Madeline looked at the expensive ring on Cynthia’s finger.

Then at the baby.

Then at the videos.

The affair had not simply been about love.

It had been a corporate takeover.

But Jeffrey had made one mistake.

The company he believed Madeline owned was not actually hers to transfer.

👉 The signature Jeffrey stole could ruin him—because the real owner of the company had never authorized the deal.
