Chapter 4 - The Room Without a Window

Madeline’s hand closed around the brass doorknob.
Locked.
“Give me the key,” she said.
Jeffrey crossed his arms.
“You’re overreacting.”
Madeline dialed 911.
Noelle’s posture changed immediately.
“Jeffrey, open it.”
He glared at his mother.
“You said you handled this.”
Those six words went directly into Madeline’s recording.
Noelle’s face turned gray.
Jeffrey reached into his pocket and threw a small key onto the console table.
Madeline picked it up.
Her fingers shook once.
Then stopped.
The lock clicked.
The narrow door opened inward.
There was no pantry.
No shelves.
No window.
Only a cramped storage room beneath the staircase.
A thin foam mat lay on the floor.
A stained blanket was folded in one corner.
Beside it sat a plastic cup, a broken night-light, and one child’s sneaker.
The room smelled of damp fabric and fear.
Madeline could not breathe.
She looked back at Liam.
“You slept here?”
He nodded once.
“How many nights?”
Jeffrey stepped between them.
“He wanted to. He threw tantrums in his bedroom.”
Madeline turned slowly.
A dangerous stillness entered her face.
“My son has a bedroom upstairs.”
Cynthia scoffed.
“That room is Ava’s nursery now.”
Madeline’s eyes went to the staircase.
The nursery she had designed for Liam before his birth had been painted white and pink for Jeffrey’s secret child.
Noelle’s voice sharpened.
“Liam was disruptive. The baby needed sleep.”
“So you locked him under the stairs?”
“We never locked him in.”
Madeline looked at the outside bolt.
It could only be secured from the hallway.
She photographed it.
Then the mat.
Then the cup.
Then the dirty sneaker.
Jeffrey reached for her phone.
Madeline stepped back.
“Touch me, and I add assault to the call.”
He froze.
The front doors suddenly opened.
A housekeeper named Rosa entered carrying grocery bags.
She stopped when she saw the storage room exposed.
The bags slipped from her hands.
Oranges rolled across the marble.
Rosa’s eyes filled with terror.
“I told them this was wrong,” she whispered.
Noelle pointed at her.
“You are fired.”
Rosa looked at Madeline.
“I took pictures.”
Jeffrey lunged toward her.
Madeline moved between them.
“Where are they?”
Rosa’s hands trembled.
“Somebody deleted them from my phone.”
Cynthia smiled again.
“There. No proof.”
Rosa reached beneath her blouse and pulled out a tiny memory card on a chain.

“I made a copy.”
👉 The memory card held more than pictures of Liam’s room—it contained footage of Jeffrey planning to remove Madeline from her own company.
