Chapter 14 - Anthony’s Last Message

Henry found the final recording during digitization of the estate archive.

It wasn’t legal.

It wasn’t about shares.

It was personal.

My father was sitting alone in his study.

The video quality was terrible.

He looked thinner than I remembered.

“Matteo,” he began.

I had to stop the recording.

Then start again.

“If you ever see this, I probably failed to tell you something while I still had the chance.”

Elena squeezed my hand.

My father continued.

“You were never weak because you loved differently from Carlo.”

My throat tightened.

I had spent half my life hearing the opposite.

“You were the only one who ever asked whether winning was worth what it cost.”

He looked down.

“I should have protected that in you.”

Then:

“If you have a child someday, do not teach him that power is love.”

I closed my eyes.

“Teach him that safety is love. Honesty is love. Walking away from cruelty is love.”

The video ended.

I sat there for a long time.

Elena whispered:

“He knew.”

“Too late.”

“Yes.”

“But he knew.”

That mattered more than I expected.

My father had not fixed the family while alive.

But he had tried to build safeguards after realizing what Viola and Carlo had become.

Imperfectly.

Late.

Still real.

That night I carried Luca upstairs.

He was nearly two now.

He rested his head on my shoulder.

“Daddy.”

“Yeah, buddy?”

“Fire.”

He had started using more words.

We had a small fireplace with a safety screen.

He pointed toward it.

For a second, my stomach clenched.

Then Luca smiled.

“Warm.”

I almost cried.

Fire did not belong to Carlo anymore.

Just like our family name didn’t belong to Viola.

We could teach new meanings.

The next morning, Elena suggested something.

“Let’s have a party.”

I stared at her.

“You hate Russo family parties.”

“Exactly.”

She smiled.

“One without them.”

A year after the courtyard incident, we planned a small gathering.

No business associates.

No power games.

No staged elegance.

Just people we trusted.

And one fire pit.

👉 One year after Luca had been held over flames, Matteo and Elena chose to return to the very symbol that once terrified them—and give it a completely different meaning.
