Chapter 2 - The Document in Viola’s Study
I sent every guest home.
Nobody argued.
Carlo was taken to another room to be checked after the fight.
Viola refused to leave.
Elena sat in our bedroom holding Luca.
I locked the door behind me.
“What did you find?”
She reached into the lining of her handbag.
A folded document came out.
“I found this three days ago.”
It was a copy of a trust amendment.
Russo Family Holdings.
My father’s signature appeared at the bottom.
My father had died four years earlier.
I scanned the first page.
Then the second.
And froze.
Upon the birth of Matteo Russo’s first lawful child, twenty-five percent of the controlling shares shall transfer into an irrevocable trust for that child.
Beneficiary:
Luca Russo.
My hands tightened.
“I’ve never seen this.”
“I know.”
“Where did you find it?”
“In Viola’s study. Behind another file.”
I looked at the date.
The amendment had been signed six months before my father died.
“Why was it hidden?”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“That’s what I was trying to figure out.”
Then she told me what happened.
Viola caught her reading it.
She demanded the document.
Elena refused.
The next day, Carlo cornered her and called her a thief.
That morning, Viola told Elena she would “learn respect.”
And at the party, Carlo grabbed Luca.
My stomach turned.
“They were trying to scare you into returning this.”
“Yes.”
I stood.
Elena grabbed my wrist.
“Matteo.”
I looked back.
“There’s more.”
She handed me another page.
A handwritten note from my father.
Matteo must never be pressured into surrendering these shares. If Viola or Carlo interferes, the independent trustee must be notified.
I read it twice.
Then a third time.
My father had specifically named my mother and brother.
That meant he had anticipated this.
Or already knew what they were capable of.
I called our family attorney.
He answered on the second ring.
When I told him what I had found, he went silent.
Then he said:
“Matteo, do not give that document to Viola.”
“Why?”
