Chapter 3 - The Shares Nobody Mentioned

The attorney’s name was Henry Caldwell.
He arrived before midnight.
He examined the document under the light.
“This is authentic.”
I looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew the amendment existed.”
“You never told me.”
“I believed your father revoked it.”
“Did you see a revocation?”
Henry hesitated.
“No.”
I stood.
“Then why the hell did you believe that?”
“Viola produced a letter after your father died.”
My mother.
Of course.
“She claimed your father changed his mind.”
“Where is that letter?”
“In the estate archive.”
“Get it.”
Henry left.
I went downstairs.
Viola was sitting alone in the formal salon.
Still in her burgundy gown.
Still composed.
“You knew about Luca’s trust.”
She didn’t even pretend.
“Yes.”
“You hid it.”
“I protected the company.”
“From my infant son?”
“From you.”
I laughed once.
“You think I’m the problem?”
“You always were sentimental.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means your father was prepared to hand control to a baby.”
“Twenty-five percent.”
“Today.”
She looked directly at me.
“Tomorrow, more.”
I stopped.
“What did you say?”
Viola went quiet.
That was my first clue.
“There’s another document.”
She looked away.
I moved closer.
“What else did Dad leave Luca?”
“Nothing.”
Lie.
I knew my mother’s lies.
She became overly calm.
Then Carlo entered.
His cheek was swollen.
“You should’ve stayed out of this.”
I turned.
“You held my child over open flames.”
“It was a bluff.”
Elena appeared at the staircase holding Luca.
“A bluff?”
Carlo shrugged.
“You were never going to let anything happen.”
My vision narrowed.
Viola stood quickly between us.
“No more.”
I pointed at Carlo.
“If you ever touch my son again, you’ll deal with the police before you deal with me.”
Carlo smirked.
Then said:
“You still don’t understand, little brother.”
“Understand what?”
“If Luca gets those shares, you don’t control the company anymore.”
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
Carlo smiled.
“Not if Dad changed the voting structure.”
Viola snapped:
“Enough.”
Too late.
I looked at her.
“You didn’t hide money.”
I finally understood.
May you like
“You hid control.”
👉 The document wasn’t merely an inheritance—it could decide who controlled the Russo empire, and Viola had spent four years making sure that person was never Luca.
