Chapter 5 - My Father Knew Carlo
The clause was real.
My father had written it after an incident nobody ever told me about.
When I was twenty-three, Carlo had threatened a cousin during a dispute over company shares.
My father had settled the matter privately.
But he never forgot.
He apparently believed Carlo might one day target my family too.
So he created a safeguard.
If Carlo used intimidation against my child in connection with the estate, Carlo’s voting shares could be forfeited.
The fire-pit incident was caught on four security cameras.
Dozens of witnesses saw it.
And Viola herself had announced the motive:
“We were teaching your wife a lesson in respect.”
Their own words connected the threat to the document.
Henry looked at me.
“This could activate the clause.”
Carlo exploded.
“You’re not taking my shares.”
“I’m not taking anything.”
I nodded toward Luca.
“Dad already decided where they go.”
Carlo lunged across the table.
Two security guards stopped him.
Viola shouted:
“You cannot do this to your brother!”
I stared at her.
“He held my son over a fire.”
“He wasn’t going to drop him!”
“That is your defense?”
Her face hardened.
“This company belongs to us.”
“It belongs to whoever Dad legally left it to.”
“No.”
There was something almost desperate in her voice now.
“This family is mine.”
And there it was.
The truth underneath everything.
Viola didn’t think she managed the Russo family.
She thought she owned it.
The company.
The money.
Her sons.
Our wives.
Even our children.
Then Elena entered carrying a sealed envelope.
“I found this inside the lining of Anthony’s old desk.”
Viola stared.
“You went through his desk?”
Elena ignored her.
She handed it to me.
The front was written in my father’s handwriting.
TO MATTEO—ONLY IF VIOLA CONTESTS LUCA’S RIGHTS.
My hands went cold.
Viola took one step toward me.
“Don’t open that.”
I looked at her.
“Why?”
She didn’t answer.
