Chapter 9 - Anthony Russo’s Recording
Carlo had found the recording years earlier.
He hid it.
That alone nearly made me hang up.
“Why?”
“Because it favored you.”
Of course.
He sent me the file.
My father’s voice filled my office.
Older.
Tired.
Still unmistakably him.
If this recording is being heard, then the family is likely disputing the trust.
He stated the date.
Confirmed he was mentally competent.
Confirmed the amendments were intentional.
Then he said:
Viola believes family loyalty means obedience. Carlo has learned the same lesson. Matteo has not.
I closed my eyes.
My father continued.
That is why Matteo’s child must hold protected voting power. Not because the child is more important than the rest of the family, but because no adult should be able to threaten the child without losing the very control they seek.
Elena covered her mouth.
Then came the most painful part.
I failed my sons by allowing competition to become the language of this family.
My father knew.
He knew exactly what our home had become.
And he had tried, imperfectly, to stop it after his death.
The recording destroyed Viola’s claim of incompetence.
It also destroyed Carlo’s defense that the forfeiture clause was unclear.
My father specifically described the behavior it was meant to punish.
Threats.
Coercion.
Using a child as leverage.
Carlo had done all three in public.
But then he made a choice I didn’t expect.
He agreed to testify against Viola regarding the forged revocation letter.
Not out of goodness.
His attorneys had explained the alternative.
Still, truth was truth.
He admitted Viola asked him to help remove documents after our father’s death.
He admitted she told him the Luca trust would “destroy his future.”
He admitted she had spent years telling him I was weak.
Then he said:
“She made me think everything Matteo got was stolen from me.”
I looked at him.
“You were forty-one years old when you held my son over that fire.”
His eyes dropped.
“I know.”
“Don’t make her responsible for the choice your hands made.”
He nodded.
For once.
No argument.
That was the beginning of accountability.
Not redemption.
Then prosecutors issued formal charges against Viola related to the estate documents.
And the civil court scheduled the hearing that would determine permanent control of Carlo’s frozen shares.
Viola had one final strategy left.
