Chapter 1 - The Baby Over the Balcony

“THAT BLOOD DOESN’T BELONG TO OUR FAMILY.”
Diane’s voice cut through the empty hotel atrium.
Emma backed away, clutching ten-month-old Lily against her champagne-colored gown.
“Don’t touch my child.”
Diane grabbed Emma’s arm.
Emma twisted away.
But Diane caught Lily.
“LET GO OF HER!”
Emma fought desperately to pull her daughter back.
Then Lily slipped from her grasp.
Diane backed against the second-floor railing with the baby in her arms.
Emma stopped breathing.
“Give her back.”
Diane stared at Lily with pure contempt.
“SHE DESERVES TO DIE.”
Then she thrust Lily over the railing.
“No!”
Emma lunged.
Too late.
Lily dropped into the open atrium.
Downstairs, Michael heard Emma scream.
He looked up.
His face changed instantly.
“LILY!”
He sprinted.
Emma slammed against the railing, reaching helplessly toward her falling child.
Michael ran beneath the balcony, eyes locked upward.
He threw both arms out—
and caught Lily against his chest.
The force drove him to his knees.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Lily screamed.
Alive.
Michael wrapped both arms around her.
“Daddy’s got you.”
Upstairs, Emma turned toward Diane.
Her mother-in-law looked almost disappointed.
Michael slowly lifted his head.
He saw his mother at the railing.
Then Emma.
He understood.
Minutes later, hotel security sealed the atrium while Lily was examined and found miraculously unharmed.
Diane didn’t apologize.
Instead, she looked directly at Michael.
“That child is not a Bennett.”
Michael stared at her.
“What did you just say?”
“You heard me.”
Emma went pale.
Diane smiled.
“You really thought she could hide it forever?”
Michael turned toward his wife.
“Emma?”
Emma was shaking.
Not because Diane was right.
Because Diane had just revealed she knew something she was never supposed to know.
Emma reached into her evening bag.
Inside was a sealed envelope she had carried for almost a year.
Diane saw it.
Her smile disappeared.
Michael noticed.
“What’s in there?”
Emma looked at Diane.
Then at Michael.
“The reason your mother has wanted Lily gone since before she was born.”
Diane suddenly lunged for the envelope.
May you like
Security stopped her.
And for the first time that night, Michael saw genuine terror on his mother’s face.
