Chapter 7 - Robert's Real Trust

Michael's attorney located the original trust through the independent law firm Robert secretly retained.

Diane's copy was outdated.

The real document changed everything.

Robert left Diane substantial personal support.

A home.

Income.

Medical coverage.

Security.

But no ownership of the core Bennett holdings.

Those passed into a protected trust for Michael.

Then Michael's children.

The language was explicit.

Michael Bennett, whom I have knowingly, freely, and permanently recognized as my son regardless of biological parentage.

Michael had to stop reading.

Emma finished for him.

Any child legally or biologically recognized by Michael would be treated as Robert's grandchild.

Lily was protected.

Completely.

Then came the clause Robert warned about.

If Diane knowingly attempted to disinherit, harm, coerce, or challenge Michael or his children using biological parentage, her discretionary trust privileges could be terminated subject to the document's terms and lawful findings.

Emma whispered:

“He knew.”

Michael nodded.

“He knew exactly what she might do.”

Diane's attorneys challenged the document.

Independent witnesses confirmed it.

The signing was recorded.

Robert appeared lucid.

Deliberate.

Certain.

On video, his attorney asked:

“Mr. Bennett, are you aware Michael may not be your biological child?”

Robert answered:

“I don't ‘may’ know. I know.”

Michael's eyes filled.

“And do you still intend to identify him as your son?”

Robert almost looked offended.

“He is my son.”

The attorney continued:

“And his children?”

“My grandchildren.”

Robert leaned toward the camera.

“If anyone uses my name to tell them otherwise, they're speaking for themselves. Not me.”

Emma started crying.

Michael laughed through his tears.

His father had dismantled Diane's entire ideology from beyond the grave.

The legal process surrounding Diane's financial conduct continued separately.

The hotel incident continued separately.

Michael didn't need to manipulate either.

He had evidence.

He had counsel.

He had Lily safe.

That was enough.

Then Diane requested one private meeting with Michael.

He agreed only with attorneys present.

She entered looking smaller.

But still proud.

“You're destroying your mother.”

Michael stared at her.

“No.”

“You released private family records.”

“Investigators obtained financial records.”

“You brought Thomas back.”

“You paid him to disappear.”

Her composure cracked.

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

“Being known as another man's child!”

Michael stared at her.

“I was another man's child.”

Diane froze.

Michael continued:

“Robert's.”

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

For the first time, Michael saw the truth she could never tolerate.

Robert had made biology irrelevant.

Her secret had never possessed the power she imagined.

Then Michael asked:

“Why Lily?”

Diane looked away.

“Why did you hate my daughter?”

Silence.

Michael leaned forward.

“What were you actually afraid she'd reveal?”

May you like

Diane's eyes filled with panic.

And Michael realized the paternity secret still wasn't the deepest one.
