Chapter 4 - The Man Diane Said Was Gone

Robert's evidence was stored with his estate attorney.
Two sealed genetic samples.
One from Michael.
One identified as Thomas Cavanaugh.
Robert had never tested them.
That surprised Michael.
The attorney explained why.
“Your father decided the choice should be yours.”
Michael stared at the sealed package.
Robert had protected the truth without forcing it on him.
Michael authorized testing.
Then waited.
Forty-eight hours felt endless.
Meanwhile, investigators reviewed the hotel incident.
Security footage was devastating.
Emma trying to protect Lily.
Diane taking the child.
The railing.
The fall.
Michael's desperate catch.
Whatever Diane believed about blood did not excuse what she had done.
Michael refused every request from relatives to “handle this privately.”
“No.”
His aunt pleaded:
“She's your mother.”
Michael looked at Lily sleeping safely beside Emma.
“And that's my daughter.”
There would be no family cover-up.
Then the DNA results arrived.
Probability Thomas Cavanaugh was Michael's biological father:
99.99%.
Michael sat motionless.
Emma reached for his hand.
He let her.
Eventually he whispered:
“Robert knew.”
“Yes.”
“And loved me anyway.”
“Yes.”
That mattered more than the result.
But another question remained.
Where was Thomas?
A private investigator found him in Vermont.
Alive.
Seventy years old.
When Michael called, Thomas began crying before Michael finished introducing himself.
“I've waited thirty years for this.”
Michael's anger rose.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you disappeared?”
“Robert made me.”
Michael went silent.
Thomas corrected himself.
“No. That's unfair. Robert gave me a choice.”
After discovering the affair, Robert confronted Thomas.
Thomas wanted to claim Michael publicly.
Robert asked one question:
“Do you want to be his father, or do you want to win?”
Thomas couldn't answer.
Diane refused to leave Robert.
The adults were tearing each other apart.
Thomas finally left.
But before doing so, he gave Robert the DNA sample.
“Why?”
“Because someday Michael deserved the truth.”
Michael's voice hardened.
“Then why didn't you tell me when I became an adult?”
Thomas went quiet.
“Diane contacted me.”
“When?”
“Your twenty-first birthday.”
Michael froze.
“She paid me to stay away.”
Michael closed his eyes.
There it was again.
Money.
Silence.
Control.
“How much?”
“Two hundred thousand dollars.”
“From DHC Holdings?”
Thomas sounded confused.
“No.”
“Then where?”
“The Bennett family trust.”
Michael slowly stood.
Diane hadn't merely hidden his biological father.
May you like
She had used Robert Bennett's family money to keep Thomas silent.
And if Robert's financial records were right, she later transferred millions more.
