Chapter 3 - Robert Bennett Already Knew

Michael read his father's letter until the words blurred.

Robert Bennett had known.

And still raised him.

Coached his baseball team.

Taught him to drive.

Sat awake with him after his first breakup.

Made him best man when Robert renewed his vows with Diane.

Michael's voice cracked.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

Emma answered softly.

“Read the last page.”

Robert had explained.

Michael was his son.

He refused to turn a young man's identity into punishment for Diane's betrayal.

But something changed near the end of Robert's life.

Money began disappearing from a Bennett family holding company.

Diane insisted Robert was confused.

Robert wasn't.

He hired a forensic accountant.

The suspicious transfers went to an entity called DHC Holdings.

Michael frowned.

“What does DHC mean?”

Emma didn't know.

Robert's letter did.

Diane Hale Cavanaugh.

Michael stared.

Cavanaugh wasn't a name he recognized.

Robert believed it belonged to Michael's biological father.

That was why he preserved the records.

Not revenge.

Protection.

Robert feared Diane was quietly moving Bennett assets to another family.

Michael stood.

“So she spent years preaching about bloodlines while secretly transferring Dad's money to the man she had an affair with?”

“Robert couldn't prove who controlled the company.”

Michael called the Bennett family attorney.

The answer arrived the next morning.

DHC Holdings still existed.

Its controlling owner was hidden behind several entities.

But one old incorporation record listed an organizer.

Thomas Cavanaugh.

Michael felt the floor disappear beneath him.

He knew that name.

Everyone in the Bennett family did.

Thomas had been Robert's closest friend.

His business partner.

And Michael's godfather.

Thomas had disappeared from their lives when Michael was six.

Diane always claimed Robert ended the friendship over money.

Robert's letter suggested something very different.

Then Michael remembered something.

Thomas had attended his fifth birthday.

There was a photograph.

Michael found it in cloud storage.

Robert stood behind the cake.

Diane beside him.

Thomas at the edge of the frame.

Michael zoomed in.

Thomas wasn't looking at the camera.

He was looking at Michael.

And Diane was watching Thomas.

Michael suddenly understood why Robert had kept that photograph.

On its original back, his father had written a date.

And three words:

ASK DIANE ABOUT HIM.

Michael called his mother from the hospital.

Diane answered through her attorney.

Michael asked only one question.

“Is Thomas Cavanaugh my biological father?”

Diane remained silent.

Then disconnected.

That silence told Michael more than another denial could have.

But Emma wasn't satisfied.

Neither was Robert.

His letter mentioned one final piece of evidence.

A DNA sample Robert had secured years earlier.

Michael looked at Emma.

“Where?”

May you like

Emma hesitated.

“Your father put it somewhere Diane could never legally touch.”
