Chapter 8 - Lily Was Never the Problem

Diane finally answered.

“Lily looks like him.”

Michael frowned.

“Who?”

She refused.

Emma suddenly understood.

“Thomas?”

Diane shook her head.

Michael stared.

“Then who?”

Diane's attorney advised her not to answer.

The meeting ended.

But Michael couldn't forget those words.

Lily looks like him.

He examined family photographs.

Robert.

Thomas.

Grandparents.

Uncles.

Nothing.

Then Emma remembered Diane's reaction during Lily's first birthday planning.

She had stared at Lily's eyes and whispered:

“Not again.”

Emma assumed she meant Michael.

Now they searched older photographs from Diane's family.

One face stopped Michael.

A young man standing beside Diane when she was seventeen.

Same light eyes.

Same distinctive dimple Lily had when she smiled.

The photograph was labeled:

JAMES HALE.

Diane's older brother.

Michael had never heard of him.

Public records showed James died at twenty-two.

No children.

Or so the family history claimed.

Then Michael found a sealed probate case.

James had fathered a daughter.

That daughter had been adopted privately after his death.

Michael stared at Emma.

“What does this have to do with Lily?”

Genealogical records supplied the answer.

The adopted daughter was Emma's mother.

Emma went completely still.

“My mother?”

Yes.

Emma was James Hale's biological granddaughter.

Diane was Emma's great-aunt.

Michael stared at his wife.

They were not biologically related through Michael, because Diane was not Michael's biological mother? No—Diane was Michael's biological mother.

The realization hit him immediately.

Emma was descended from Diane's brother.

That meant Michael and Emma were biologically related as first cousins once removed.

Both were adults, and their marriage had been legally valid under the law applicable to them, but neither had known of the connection.

The discovery devastated them emotionally.

Diane had known.

That was the secret.

She discovered Emma's maternal adoption history after Michael announced their engagement.

She said nothing.

Why?

Because admitting it would expose the Hale family adoption records.

And those records contained financial documents connected to another secret.

James Hale had owned a significant founding interest in land later absorbed into Bennett Holdings.

His daughter—and therefore Emma's maternal line—may have retained an inheritance claim Diane had concealed.

Lily wasn't threatening Diane merely because of resemblance.

Lily connected both branches.

Michael's line.

Emma's Hale line.

A descendant whose existence made the buried genealogy much harder to hide.

Emma stared at the records.

“She knew before our wedding?”

Michael looked at Diane's archived messages.

“Yes.”

Emma began shaking with rage.

Diane had spent years calling Lily's blood “wrong.”

But she had concealed Emma's family history because acknowledging it could expose assets she had quietly treated as her own.

Then the forensic accountant called.

James Hale's original estate had not vanished.

A trust still existed.

Current value:

approximately $18 million.

And Diane had been receiving distributions from it for decades.
