Chapter 10 - Robert Left One More File
Michael refused to defend his father blindly.
If Robert knew, Michael wanted the truth.
Robert's estate attorney searched his confidential files.
There was one folder marked:
HALE.
Michael opened it with Emma.
Inside was the investigator's report Diane commissioned.
A copy.
Robert had obtained it.
Emma's face fell.
“He knew.”
Michael kept reading.
Then found Robert's handwritten note.
Received anonymously. Diane refuses to explain.
Another page documented Robert confronting Diane.
She claimed the genealogy was inaccurate.
Robert hired an independent genealogist.
The genealogist confirmed Emma's lineage.

six weeks after Michael and Emma's wedding.
Michael felt sick.
Robert had learned after the marriage.
What did he do next?
A letter answered.
Robert wrote to Emma.
He explained her maternal history.
James Hale.
The trust.
Everything.
But Emma never received it.
Courier records showed delivery to Michael and Emma's former apartment.
Signed by:
D. Bennett.
Diane.
Emma stared.
“She intercepted it.”
Again.
Diane had taken Robert's attempt to tell the truth.
Robert apparently realized the letter never reached Emma.
He then initiated a legal review.
But his health declined rapidly.
The process stalled.
Before dying, he transferred his Hale evidence to independent counsel.
That was why the records survived.
Michael exhaled.
Robert had not been perfect.
He had stayed married to Diane.
Kept painful secrets too long.
But when he learned Emma's rights were being concealed, he tried to expose them.
Emma read his final memo.
If Emma never received my letter, assume Diane intercepted it. Do not allow my silence while investigating this to be mistaken for agreement.
Emma closed the folder.
“He tried.”
Michael nodded.
“That doesn't give us back the years.”
“No.”
But it mattered.
The court later received evidence from the courier, investigator, genealogist, and trust records.
Diane's story deteriorated.
Then came the hotel footage.
Her defense had attempted to frame the confrontation as panic and confusion.
The video showed otherwise.
Diane pursuing Emma.
Trying to take Lily.
Her words about blood.
The railing.
The act itself.
Michael catching his daughter.
The room was silent after it played.
Diane looked down.
For the first time, Michael didn't see a powerful Bennett matriarch.
He saw a woman who had spent decades believing every secret could be controlled if she controlled enough people.
Robert.
Thomas.
Emma.
The Hale trust.
Michael.
