Chapter 2 - The Envelope Diane Wanted Destroyed

Michael wanted answers immediately.

Emma refused to discuss them in the hotel lobby.

“First Lily.”

That ended the argument.

Their daughter was taken for a full medical evaluation.

Michael stayed beside her while Emma sat silently nearby.

Diane was removed from them and questioned separately about what had happened.

Michael couldn't stop replaying the fall.

His own mother.

His daughter.

Those two facts refused to fit together.

Finally, Lily fell asleep against him.

Michael looked at Emma.

“Now.”

Emma placed the envelope on the table.

Diane had spent months insulting Lily.

Too small.

Too quiet.

Nothing like Michael as a baby.

Then the comments became stranger.

“Are you absolutely sure Michael is the father?”

Emma initially thought Diane simply hated her.

Then, during Emma’s pregnancy, Diane secretly took a prenatal document from her bedroom.

Emma caught her photographing it.

“Why?”

“I didn't know.”

“Until now?”

Emma nodded.

She opened the envelope.

Inside was not a DNA test.

It was a letter from Michael’s late father, Robert Bennett.

Michael recognized the handwriting instantly.

“My dad wrote this?”

“Before he died.”

Robert had given it to Emma privately shortly after learning she was pregnant.

He made her promise not to show Michael unless Diane ever threatened Lily's place in the family.

Michael read.

Then stopped.

His father had written:

If Diane starts talking about blood, it means she knows the truth has surfaced.

Michael looked up.

“What truth?”

Emma produced a second document.

A decades-old hospital record.

Michael's birth record.

Except something was wrong.

The blood-type information recorded at birth was medically incompatible with Robert Bennett being Michael’s biological father.

Michael stared at Emma.

“No.”

“It isn't proof by itself.”

“Then why did Dad have it?”

“Because he discovered it.”

Michael looked back at the letter.

Robert had confronted Diane years earlier.

She denied everything.

Then begged him never to investigate further.

Robert agreed for one reason.

Michael.

He already considered Michael his son.

Biology would change nothing.

But before Robert died, he learned Diane had begun manipulating the family estate around “blood descendants.”

He became afraid she might someday weaponize the very secret she had created.

Michael whispered:

“My mother keeps saying Lily isn't Bennett blood…”

Emma nodded.

“She isn't afraid Lily isn't yours.”

Michael's eyes slowly widened.

Emma finished:

May you like

“She’s afraid Lily is yours.”

Because if Lily was unquestionably Michael’s biological daughter, every future DNA test involving Lily could lead Michael straight back to the secret Diane had spent thirty-six years hiding.
