Chapter 6 - The Payment Before Robert Died

Michael refused to jump to conclusions.

His father's death had been attributed to advanced heart disease.

He would not turn suspicion into accusation without evidence.

The medical-services company turned out to be legitimate.

The payment was not for treatment.

It purchased a private long-term care contract.

For someone else.

Michael stared at the beneficiary name.

Evelyn Cavanaugh.

Thomas's younger sister.

Michael called Thomas.

“Why was my mother paying for Evelyn?”

Thomas went silent.

Then whispered:

“Oh, God.”

Evelyn had suffered severe neurological injuries after a car accident thirty-seven years earlier.

She required lifelong care.

Thomas had always believed an anonymous charitable trust paid the bills.

It wasn't anonymous.

Diane had funded it.

Michael frowned.

“Why?”

Thomas sounded shaken.

“Because Evelyn knew.”

“Knew what?”

“About us.”

Diane and Thomas had begun their affair while Robert traveled frequently for business.

Evelyn discovered it.

She threatened to tell Robert.

Then the car accident happened.

Michael felt cold.

“Are you saying my mother caused it?”

“No.”

Thomas answered immediately.

“I don't know that.”

Good.

Michael needed facts.

Not another family myth.

Records showed Diane began paying Evelyn's care costs years after the accident.

That could indicate guilt.

Or compassion.

Or silence.

Investigators interviewed Evelyn.

Her speech was limited but clear.

She remembered Diane.

She remembered the affair.

And she remembered something else.

The night of her accident, she had been driving to Robert's house.

She intended to tell him everything.

Another vehicle followed her.

She lost control on a wet road.

She never saw the driver.

No evidence established Diane caused the crash.

Michael refused to claim otherwise.

But Evelyn explained the payments.

Years later, Diane visited her.

Diane apologized.

Not for causing the crash.

For what happened afterward.

Diane said:

“If you had reached Robert that night, none of this would have happened.”

Michael frowned.

“None of what?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You.”

Silence.

She hadn't meant Michael shouldn't exist.

She meant the decades of lies.

Evelyn then revealed something Thomas never knew.

Robert eventually visited her.

He already suspected the affair.

She told him everything.

Including that Diane was pregnant.

Robert knew before Michael was born.

Michael's eyes filled.

His father hadn't discovered the truth years later.

Robert had known from the beginning.

He chose to sign Michael's birth certificate anyway.

Chose to raise him.

Chose him before he ever held him.

Michael covered his face.

For thirty-six years, Diane had treated biology like a weapon.

Robert had quietly answered that argument on Michael's first day alive.

Then Evelyn gave him a sealed letter.

“Robert left this with me.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

The front carried Michael's name.

Inside was one sentence that made him stop breathing.

If Diane ever attacks your child's place in this family, show her the original trust—not the copy she believes I signed.
