Chapter 10 - The Secret Elena Was Afraid to Tell
Elena survived the procedure.
The infection had spread farther than doctors expected, but they controlled it before permanent damage occurred.
When she woke, Arthur was beside her.
Leo slept in a hospital bassinet under a nurse’s supervision.
Arthur waited until Elena could speak comfortably.
“Margaret said something in court.”
Elena saw the question in his face.
“She mentioned Westbridge?”
Arthur nodded.
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
“When we started treatment, the clinic said there was a problem with our embryo storage. They offered us placement in a legacy genetic program.”
Arthur felt his chest tighten.
“What does that mean?”
“They had preserved material connected to your biological family.”
“My biological family?”
“I didn’t know the truth then. They said Charles had created the program years earlier in case you ever needed fertility assistance.”
“Why didn’t I sign anything?”
“You did. The consent packet was mixed with our original treatment forms.”
Arthur remembered pages of electronic signatures.
Elena continued.
“After I became pregnant, Margaret came to see me. She knew before we told anyone.”
“How?”
“She said she had access to the clinic’s records.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“She threatened to destroy the embryos.”
Arthur went still.
“There are more?”
Elena nodded.
“She said if I told you anything, she would make sure we lost Leo and every chance of having another child.”
Arthur’s anger softened into pain.
“You carried this alone.”
“I thought I was protecting our family.”
Margaret had preyed on Elena’s fear, then used her silence to isolate her further.
Arthur took her hand.
“No more secrets between us.”
Elena looked toward Leo.
“The clinic director gave me an envelope the day Leo was born. He said Charles ordered it delivered only after a healthy Bennett child was born.”
“Where is it?”
“I hid it under Leo’s mattress.”
The metal box.
Margaret had taken it.
“What was inside?”
“I never opened it. Margaret arrived before I could.”
Detective Hayes traced Margaret’s movements after she left the house. Traffic cameras showed her meeting Richard in a parking garage.
Richard carried the metal box into his car.
Hours later, his car was found abandoned near the river.
The box was gone.
Richard had also vanished.
At Bennett Medical Supply, company auditors discovered millions of dollars transferred through shell consulting firms over seven years.
Richard had stolen from the company.
Margaret had used the trust petition to protect him and gain access before Arthur discovered the fraud.
Then the hospital nurse entered holding a padded envelope.
“This was delivered for Elena.”
There was no return address.
Inside lay a single frozen-storage access card and a handwritten note.
You have forty-eight hours before the remaining embryos are destroyed.
