Chapter 12 - The Woman Charles Tried to Protect
Police found Evelyn Moore at a motel outside Baltimore.
She had not been kidnapped.
She had fled after Richard threatened her.
The silver-haired woman was with her.
Her name was Rebecca Hale.
She was Arthur’s biological mother.
Arthur met them in a private police interview room.
Rebecca stared at him for a long moment before speaking.
“You look like my father.”
Arthur did not know what to say.
Rebecca explained that she had donated genetic material through an experimental program when she was twenty-two. The clinic promised anonymity.
Years later, Charles learned that Rebecca’s family held valuable patents related to medical filtration technology.
Those patents were the foundation upon which Bennett Medical Supply later expanded.
Margaret discovered the connection.
“She didn’t want a child,” Rebecca said. “She wanted an heir tied to my family’s intellectual property.”
Arthur felt physically ill.
“Charles knew?”
“Not at first. Margaret selected the embryo without telling him why.”
Evelyn confirmed it.
Margaret bribed a laboratory administrator to identify donors. She chose Rebecca because any biological descendant could potentially strengthen a future claim to the Hale patents.
Charles discovered the scheme years later.
By then he loved Arthur deeply and refused to let the truth change their relationship.
“He spent the rest of his life trying to separate your inheritance from Margaret’s control,” Rebecca said.
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“Margaret threatened to accuse me of trying to steal you. Charles asked me to wait until he had secured the trust.”
The process was never completed before his death.
Richard learned the truth while managing company records.
He realized that controlling Arthur meant controlling both Bennett Medical Supply and potential Hale licensing rights worth hundreds of millions.
Margaret wanted the status and fortune she believed she had engineered.
Richard wanted the money.
Together, they needed Arthur discredited and Elena declared unstable.
Leo’s birth triggered Charles’s final legal protections.
“The metal box contained the amended trust,” Evelyn said.
Arthur leaned forward.
“What did it say?”
“Once you had a biological child, Margaret’s authority ended permanently. You became full trustee immediately.”
That was why Margaret acted after Leo’s birth.
The moment the amendment was filed, she would lose everything.
“Do you have another copy?” Daniel asked.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Charles created only one signed original.”
Margaret had it.
Without the original, they could still prove fraud—but the company board could delay recognizing Arthur’s control.
Rebecca placed a hand on the table.
“There may be a second record.”
She explained that Charles recorded the signing in Evelyn’s clinic archive. The video included witnesses and a full reading of the amendment.
But the archive server had been removed from Evelyn’s house.
Richard had taken it.
Detective Hayes received a call.
Richard’s passport had been flagged at Dulles Airport.
He was not fleeing the country.
He was waiting for someone arriving from London.
