Chapter 11 - The Laboratory in the Woods

Arthur wanted to drive to Virginia immediately.

Detective Hayes stopped him.

“This is bait.”

“I know.”

“And you still plan to go.”

“She has access to our embryos.”

“We don’t know that.”

Elena spoke from the hospital bed.

“She does.”

She explained that Westbridge had transferred the remaining embryos to a private storage partner after the clinic began renovations.

The address on Margaret’s note matched that facility.

Daniel obtained an emergency court order preventing destruction or transfer of any genetic material associated with Arthur and Elena.

By afternoon, Hayes had coordinated with Virginia authorities.

Arthur traveled with police protection while Elena remained under guard at the hospital.

The laboratory stood behind a steel gate in a wooded industrial area. Its director, Dr. Louise Grant, met them at the entrance.

“No embryos were scheduled for destruction,” she said. “But someone attempted to authorize a transfer yesterday.”

“Who?”

“Margaret Bennett.”

“She has no legal authority.”

“She submitted documents claiming Arthur and Elena were incapacitated.”

The documents carried a digital seal from Daniel’s law office.

Daniel examined them.

“The seal is genuine, but I did not authorize this.”

Someone had accessed his firm’s secure system.

Richard had planned more than financial theft. He had built pathways through every institution surrounding Arthur.

Dr. Grant led them to the storage records.

Four embryos remained.

All were secure.

Arthur finally exhaled.

Then Dr. Grant revealed something else.

“Charles Bennett paid for two separate genetic preservation accounts.”

Arthur looked at her.

“One belonged to you. The other belonged to the biological donor connected to your birth.”

“Do you know her name?”

“Her identity was sealed.”

Hayes showed her the fragment of the Westbridge photograph.

Dr. Grant studied it.

“I know the woman standing behind them.”

Arthur had assumed the figure was a clinic employee.

“Who is she?”

“Dr. Evelyn Moore. She founded Westbridge.”

“Is she still alive?”

“Yes. She retired in Maryland.”

Hayes called ahead.

They reached Evelyn Moore’s home after sunset.

The front door stood open.

Inside, drawers had been emptied and files scattered across the floor.

Evelyn was gone.

On the kitchen table sat a photograph of Arthur as a newborn.

Beside it lay a recent photograph of Leo taken inside the Bennett nursery.

Someone had been watching them long before Arthur left for Chicago.

A laptop on the table displayed a paused security video.

The image showed Richard entering Evelyn’s home that morning.

Behind him stood Margaret.

But neither of them appeared to be in control.

A third person entered after them.

An older woman with silver hair and the same blue eyes as Arthur.

Arthur moved closer to the screen.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

Then the video ended.

Under the laptop was a note written by Charles.

Arthur, if Evelyn is ever found, she can tell you why Margaret chose you—and why she has always feared your real mother.

👉 The conspiracy had begun before Arthur was born, and the silver-haired stranger on the video appeared to be the woman Margaret had spent thirty-four years hiding.
