Chapter 8 - The Mother Who Never Gave Birth to Him

Arthur sat on the storage room floor, unable to speak.
Daniel read the declaration carefully.
Charles stated that an anonymous donor embryo had been implanted in Margaret after years of infertility. Margaret carried Arthur and gave birth to him, but she had no genetic connection to him.
That alone did not make her less of a mother.
What came next did.
Charles wrote that Margaret had discovered the identity of the genetic donor and spent years secretly monitoring her. He feared Margaret’s obsession would eventually threaten Arthur and any future children he might have.
Arthur looked up.
“Why would he hide this from me?”
Daniel turned the page.
“Because Margaret threatened to destroy the company and accuse Charles of fraud if he told you.”
The declaration referenced additional evidence stored in a bank safe-deposit box.
Before they could leave, Arthur received a call from the hospital.
Elena’s condition had worsened.
Her fever had spiked, and doctors were preparing an emergency procedure to treat the infection.
Arthur rushed back.
Elena was being wheeled toward surgery when he arrived.
She reached for him.
“Don’t let her take Leo.”
“She won’t.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
Arthur kissed her forehead.
“I’m sorry I left.”
“You came back.”
The doors closed between them.
Arthur stood in the corridor with Leo in his arms.
For the first time since entering the house, he allowed himself to cry.
Caroline approached slowly.
“I should have helped her.”
Arthur did not look at her.
“Yes.”
“I was afraid of Margaret.”
“Elena was afraid too. She still tried to protect her child.”
Caroline lowered her head.
“Margaret told everyone Elena had been diagnosed with psychosis. She said we weren’t supposed to contradict her.”
“Did Elena ask for help?”
Caroline’s voice broke.
“She looked at me when she fell.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
Caroline handed him a folded cloth napkin.
“I took this from the table after the ambulance left.”
Inside was a tiny digital recorder.
“I saw Margaret hide it beneath her plate before you arrived.”
Detective Hayes played the audio.
Margaret’s voice came first.
“When Arthur enters, no one stands up. No one calls for help. You will let him see what kind of wife he chose.”
Walter protested.
“She needs a doctor.”
“She needs to learn obedience.”
Then another voice spoke through a phone on speaker.
A man.
“You need Arthur to strike you. Without documented violence, the trust petition may fail.”
Margaret replied, “He will. He has always been emotional about weak women.”
Arthur’s skin went cold.
The man’s voice sounded familiar.
Not because Arthur had met Samuel Voss.
Because he had heard that same voice every quarter for three years during company board meetings.
Daniel recognized it too.
“Richard Cole,” he whispered.
Richard was Bennett Medical Supply’s chief financial officer.
He controlled company accounts, trust distributions, and Arthur’s travel schedule.
Richard had arranged the emergency meeting in Chicago.
Richard had kept Arthur away from home.

And Richard was waiting outside the courtroom for Margaret when the emergency hearing began.
👉 Margaret’s cruelty was only one piece of the conspiracy, because the company’s most trusted executive had designed the trap from inside Arthur’s own business.
