Chapter 9 - The Hearing Built on Lies
The emergency hearing began at nine the next morning.
Elena remained in surgery.
Arthur sat beside Daniel with Leo asleep in a carrier at his feet.
Across the courtroom, Margaret wore a gray neck brace she had not needed at the hospital. Richard Cole sat behind her attorney, pretending to be a concerned family friend.
Margaret’s lawyer addressed Judge Helen Monroe.
“My client was assaulted while attempting to protect a newborn from two unstable parents.”
Daniel stood.
“We have hospital findings, video evidence, and audio establishing that Mrs. Bennett drugged and restrained Elena Bennett before deliberately provoking Arthur.”
Margaret’s lawyer objected.
“The source and integrity of those recordings have not been verified.”
Judge Monroe reviewed the guardianship agreement.
“Mrs. Bennett, were you present when Elena signed this?”
“Yes.”
“Was she under medication?”
“Only medication prescribed by her doctor.”
“Dr. Voss?”
“Yes.”
The courtroom doors opened.
Detective Hayes entered with two officers.
She handed Daniel a file.
Samuel Voss had been located at a private airfield twenty miles outside the city. He had attempted to board a charter plane using a false passport.
Judge Monroe allowed Hayes to testify briefly.
“Dr. Voss admitted that he never evaluated Elena Bennett. He signed the report after receiving twenty-five thousand dollars.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“From whom?” the judge asked.
Hayes looked toward Richard.
“Bennett Medical Supply’s consulting account.”
Richard stood.
“That account funds hundreds of legitimate services.”
Hayes continued.
“The payment was authorized using Mr. Cole’s executive credentials.”
Richard’s attorney immediately requested a recess.
Judge Monroe denied it.
Daniel played the dining room recording.
Margaret’s own words filled the courtroom.
You need Arthur to strike you.
The man answering her was not clearly identifiable because of distortion, but Richard’s face lost color.
Margaret removed her neck brace.
She realized the performance was no longer helping.
Then her attorney produced another document.
“Regardless of the circumstances surrounding last night, the family trust grants Margaret Bennett temporary authority if Arthur Bennett is charged with violence.”
“He has not been charged,” Daniel said.
Margaret looked at Arthur.
“Not yet.”
A court officer approached Daniel and whispered something.
Outside the courthouse, reporters had gathered.
Someone had leaked photographs of Margaret’s bruised face along with a headline:
MEDICAL SUPPLY HEIR ATTACKS ELDERLY MOTHER DURING CHILD CUSTODY DISPUTE.
Arthur’s company board had scheduled an emergency vote to suspend him.
Richard checked his watch.
The court case did not need to succeed immediately.
It only needed to destroy Arthur’s reputation long enough for Richard and Margaret to seize control.
Judge Monroe suspended the guardianship agreement and ordered Leo to remain with Arthur under hospital supervision.
Margaret lost her smile.
But before the hearing ended, she leaned across the aisle.
“You should ask your wife why she chose Westbridge,” she whispered.
Arthur stared at her.

👉 Margaret’s newest accusation suggested Elena had hidden something about Leo’s conception, but Arthur could not ask her while she fought for her life in surgery.
