Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Stayed Silent
Arthur found Walter near the parking elevators.
“Show me your hands.”
Walter froze.
“What?”
“Your ring.”
Walter looked down.
His Bennett crest ring was gone.
“I lost it.”
“When?”
“A few days ago.”
“Try again.”
Walter glanced toward the officers near Elena’s room.
“Not here.”
Arthur stepped into the empty family consultation room and shut the door behind them.
Walter’s shoulders sagged.
“I didn’t know Margaret was going to hurt her.”
“You held Elena down.”
“No.”
“I saw your ring.”
Walter rubbed his face.
“She called me because Elena was hysterical.”
“Elena was trying to reach her baby.”
“Margaret said she was having some kind of postpartum episode. She told me Elena had tried to leave Leo unattended.”
“And you believed her?”
“I believed my sister.”
Arthur pushed the guardianship document across the table.
“You signed this.”
Walter’s voice broke.
“She said it was temporary. Just until you came home.”
“What happened after Elena signed?”
Walter stared at the floor.
“Margaret gave her a pill.”
“And?”
“Elena refused. Margaret said it came from her doctor.”
“How did she force it into her?”
Walter remained silent.
Arthur’s voice dropped.
“You have one chance to tell me the truth before I hand the video to the police.”
Walter looked up in panic.
“I held her arms.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I didn’t understand what was happening until she stopped fighting,” Walter continued. “Then she got dizzy. She fell near the kitchen. I wanted to call an ambulance.”
“But you didn’t.”
“Margaret threatened me.”
“With what?”
Walter’s face tightened.
“She knows about money I borrowed from Dad’s estate before he died.”
Arthur stared at him.
“How much?”
“Eighty thousand dollars.”
“You stole from our father?”
“I meant to pay it back.”
“And Margaret covered it up.”
Walter nodded.
“She said if I disobeyed her, she would report me and make sure I lost everything.”
Arthur stepped away, disgusted.
“You watched Elena collapse to protect yourself.”
Walter began to cry.
“I’m sorry.”
“Sorry does not fix what you did.”
A detective entered after Officer Daniels brought her up to speed. Detective Nora Hayes took Walter’s statement and collected his phone.
Before surrendering it, Walter unlocked a hidden message thread.
Margaret had sent him instructions that morning.
Bring the papers.
Do not let her call Arthur.
If she refuses, remind her that mothers who endanger their babies lose them forever.
Then Walter scrolled to a message sent after Elena collapsed.
Keep everyone seated. Dinner begins at seven. Arthur must see her on the floor when he enters.
Detective Hayes read it twice.
“This was staged,” she said.
Arthur felt the room tilt.
Margaret had not simply abused Elena.
She had timed Arthur’s arrival.
She wanted him to find his wife unconscious.
She wanted him angry.
She wanted witnesses to see him strike her.
And now she had an assault claim that could be used against him in a custody hearing.
Arthur looked toward Elena’s room.
“This was never just about Leo.”
Detective Hayes nodded.
“She was building a case against both of you.”
Walter swallowed hard.
“There’s something else.”
Arthur turned.
Walter’s voice fell to a whisper.
