Chapter 16 - Margaret Takes the Stand

Three months later, Margaret Bennett entered federal court wearing a tailored black suit.
The bruising from Arthur’s slap had long faded.
The damage she had caused had not.
Elena sat beside Arthur, stronger now but still recovering. Leo slept against her chest.
Richard had accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony. He admitted to wire fraud, kidnapping, falsifying medical records, bribing Dr. Voss, and conspiring to seize Bennett Medical Supply.
Margaret denied everything.
On the witness stand, she described herself as a frightened grandmother manipulated by Richard.
“He used my love for my family,” she said tearfully.
The prosecutor played the kitchen recording.
Margaret insisted the audio had been taken out of context.
Then the security video showed her withholding Leo while Elena begged to enter the nursery.
Margaret claimed she was protecting the baby.
Dr. Kim testified that Elena had been hours from septic shock and that the drug combination could have killed her.
Margaret blamed Elena.
“She must have taken the pills herself.”
Then Walter testified.
His voice shook as he admitted restraining Elena.
“Margaret ordered me to hold her arms.”
Margaret stared at him with pure hatred.
“You liar.”
Walter looked at her.
“I spent my whole life afraid of you. I won’t spend the rest of it that way.”
The prosecutor introduced the text messages Margaret sent him.
The courtroom grew silent.
Next came the financial records.
Margaret had received forty-two million dollars through shell companies controlled by Richard.
She used the money to fund private investigators, bribe clinic employees, and influence members of the company board.
Still, she refused to break.
Until Evelyn Moore took the stand.
Evelyn described Margaret’s decision to select Rebecca’s embryo for financial reasons.
“You treated a child as an investment,” the prosecutor said.
“I gave Arthur a life.”
“You gave birth to him so you could own what might come through him.”
Margaret looked at Arthur.
“I raised you. Doesn’t that mean anything?”
Arthur stood only when the judge permitted him to answer.
“It means you had thirty-four years to become my mother.”
Margaret’s face trembled.
“And you chose to become my captor instead.”
The prosecutor saved the final evidence for last.
Charles’s archive video played on the courtroom screen.
Charles sat behind a desk, visibly ill.
“If Margaret ever attempts to control Arthur through violence, fraud, or his children, this recording must be released.”
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“Arthur, none of this is your fault. You were never a transaction to me. You were my son.”
Arthur lowered his head as tears filled his eyes.
The video continued.
Charles revealed that he had discovered Margaret replacing medication in his final months.
His death, officially attributed to heart failure, might not have been natural.
Margaret stopped breathing.

The courtroom erupted.
👉 Margaret had come to court expecting a fraud trial, but Charles’s final recording had just turned the case into a murder investigation.
