Chapter 17 - The Death She Thought Was Buried
Charles Bennett’s body was exhumed under court order.
Toxicology tests found traces of a heart medication he had never been prescribed.
In controlled amounts, the drug treated arrhythmia.
In excessive doses, it could cause fatal cardiac arrest.
Investigators searched Margaret’s financial records and found payments to a private nurse who had cared for Charles during his final month.
The nurse, Joanne Miller, had moved to Arizona after his death.
Federal agents located her.
Joanne admitted Margaret paid her to alter Charles’s medication schedule.
“I didn’t know she planned to kill him,” Joanne said. “She told me the extra tablets would calm his heart.”
The prosecutor presented pharmacy footage showing Margaret purchasing the medication under a false name.
Margaret’s attorney requested a deal.
The government refused.
During a second interview, Richard revealed the rest.
Charles had discovered millions missing from the company. He planned to remove both Margaret and Richard from all financial authority.
Margaret told Richard that Charles would not live long enough to sign the final documents.
Richard claimed he did not help kill him.
But he helped cover it up.
The murder charge changed everything.
Margaret finally asked to speak with Arthur.
He agreed only with Elena’s approval and only through glass in the county detention center.
Margaret picked up the phone.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she looked at Leo sleeping in Arthur’s arms.
“He has your eyes.”
“You will never see him again.”
Margaret flinched.
“I loved you.”
“No. You loved control.”
“I sacrificed my life for this family.”
“You poisoned Dad. You nearly killed Elena.”
“Charles was going to leave me with nothing.”
“He was leaving you with consequences.”
Margaret pressed her hand against the glass.
“I can still help you. There are board members Richard bribed. Accounts he never disclosed.”
“Tell the prosecutor.”
“I will tell you.”
Arthur shook his head.
“This is the last time we will speak.”
Panic finally broke through her cold expression.
“You can’t abandon me.”
“You taught me that family is supposed to obey pain in silence.”
He stood.
“Elena taught me that real family protects one another.”
Margaret struck the glass.
“Arthur!”
He walked away.
Behind him, she screamed his name until the door closed.
The trial resumed.
Joanne testified.
Richard testified.
Walter testified.
Elena took the stand last.
She described crawling toward the nursery while Margaret held Leo behind a locked door.
She described the pills, the cleaning, the hunger, and the moment she collapsed.
Margaret stared at the table.
For the first time, she could not look at the woman she had tried to erase.
The jury left to deliberate.
Two hours later, the foreperson returned.
“On the charge of conspiracy to commit murder…”
