Chapter 1 - The Cabinet Corinne Didn’t Want Opened

“DAD!”

Maisie’s scream stopped Ethan Carter in the hallway.

His fourteen-month-old daughter stood beside the sofa clutching her stuffed rabbit.

Corinne had one hand tangled in Maisie’s hair.

The other was gripping the same upper arm where a fading bruise had already made Ethan uneasy that morning.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Ethan crossed the room.

Fast.

He tore Corinne’s hand away and pulled Maisie safely behind him.

Corinne reached for the child again.

Ethan blocked her.

“TOUCH HER AGAIN. JUST TRY IT.”

Corinne stumbled back against the sofa.

Maisie buried herself against Ethan’s legs.

Then she whispered:

“She said you’d abandon me, too.”

Ethan went still.

“Too?”

Corinne’s expression changed.

Maisie looked past him.

Toward the locked wooden cabinet.

“She hid Mom’s papers.”

Corinne went white.

Ethan followed Maisie’s finger.

“What papers?”

Corinne immediately moved in front of the cabinet.

“Ethan, she doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Maisie tightened her grip on the rabbit.

Corinne glanced at the cabinet again.

That was enough.

Ethan walked toward it.

Corinne blocked him.

He moved her aside.

A small brass key was already sitting in the lock.

Corinne grabbed for it.

Ethan got there first.

He turned it.

The cabinet opened.

Inside was a thick stack of sealed legal documents.

Not old tax records.

Not household bills.

Legal papers.

Several envelopes.

A small flash drive.

And one photograph.

Ethan grabbed the documents.

Corinne caught his forearm.

“Don’t read that.”

He pulled free.

Then opened the first file.

His eyes moved across the page.

Once.

Twice.

His face drained.

Maisie’s biological mother, Claire Carter, had supposedly died two years earlier after a highway accident.

Ethan had identified her through hospital confirmation and funeral documents.

He had buried her.

He had mourned her.

But the page in his hands was dated eight months after Claire’s supposed death.

And at the bottom was a signature Ethan knew better than his own.

CLAIRE CARTER.

Ethan slowly looked at Corinne.

“You told me these papers didn’t exist.”

Corinne backed away.

Ethan turned the next page.

A petition involving guardianship.

A private medical facility.

And Maisie.

His stomach twisted.

The final page contained one line that made the room feel suddenly airless.

Claire Carter — living petitioner.

Ethan could barely speak.

“My wife is alive?”

Corinne said nothing.

That silence answered enough.

👉 Ethan had spent two years grieving Claire—but the documents hidden in Corinne’s cabinet suggested Maisie’s mother had been alive long after her funeral.
