Chapter 5 - The DNA Test Ethan Never Took

Ethan almost laughed when Julia told him.
“Maisie is my daughter.”
Julia nodded.
“I believe you.”
“I was there when she was born.”
“That isn’t legally the same as genetic proof if someone formally disputes it.”
“Who disputed it?”
Margaret Vale.
Using an affidavit supposedly signed by Claire.
The affidavit claimed Claire had admitted Ethan was not Maisie’s biological father.
Ethan stared at the signature.
“That’s fake.”
A forensic examiner agreed.
The signature had been copied from another document.
Then Julia found the supporting DNA report.
Ethan read the laboratory name.
Northfield Genetics.
He had never been tested there.
Yet the report stated Ethan Carter was excluded as Maisie’s father.
“This is fabricated.”
They contacted the laboratory.
Northfield confirmed something worse.
The test existed.
But the sample labeled Ethan Carter had come from someone else.
Chain-of-custody records listed collection by a private nurse.
Name:
Melissa Grant.
Detective Reed tracked her down.
She cooperated immediately.
Corinne had hired her.
Melissa was told Ethan was overseas and had authorized a stored sample.
She collected a toothbrush from the Carter home.
Corinne identified it as Ethan’s.
It wasn’t.
The toothbrush belonged to Ethan’s brother, Ryan.
Ryan had stayed there briefly after Warren’s funeral.
Ethan understood.
Ryan’s DNA would be genetically related—but not Maisie’s paternal match.
Enough to create exclusion.
Then Julia arranged a proper test.
Ethan.
Maisie.
Verified chain of custody.
The result:
99.9999% probability of paternity.
Ethan cried when he read it.
Not because he doubted.
Because someone had turned his relationship with his child into paperwork.
Julia filed the verified result.
Margaret’s paternity challenge began collapsing.
Then Detective Reed called.
They had reached Hawthorne Ridge.
Claire was no longer there.
Ethan’s relief vanished.
“When did she leave?”
“Nine months ago.”
“With who?”
“Unknown.”
“She walked out?”
“She was discharged.”
“Where?”
“Records say she transferred to assisted housing.”
“Where?”
“That page is missing.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Another missing document.
Another vanished address.
But the facility still had visitor logs.
Corinne visited sixteen times.
Margaret Vale visited seven.
And one person Ethan never expected had visited Claire repeatedly.
Ryan Carter.
Ethan’s younger brother.
May you like
The same brother whose toothbrush had been used to fake the paternity test.
👉 Ethan proved Maisie was unquestionably his daughter—but the visitor logs showed his own brother had been secretly seeing Claire while Ethan believed she was dead.
