Chapter 8 - Margaret Knew Where Claire Was

Margaret Vale demanded an attorney.

Then refused to speak.

Her luggage spoke anyway.

Claire’s driver’s license.

A prepaid phone.

Cash.

Documents bearing Claire’s signature.

Some authentic.

Some questionable.

Then investigators recovered the phone.

The last outgoing call had been made four days earlier.

To a rural property owned by a company connected to Margaret.

Detective Reed obtained a warrant.

Ethan was not allowed to go.

He hated that.

But he understood.

Hours passed.

Then Reed called.

“We found Claire.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

His knees nearly gave out.

“Is she hurt?”

“She’s conscious.”

“Was she being held?”

Reed paused.

“It’s complicated.”

Claire had been living in a guesthouse on the property.

The door was not physically locked from the outside.

No chains.

No guards.

But she had no car.

No active phone.

And she had been told Ethan had obtained a restraining order against her.

Fake papers were found inside.

Corinne and Margaret had kept using the same weapon.

False information.

Claire believed returning home might cause Maisie to be removed from Ethan.

So she stayed.

Ethan closed his eyes.

“What does she want?”

“To see Maisie.”

His voice broke.

“Can she?”

“Soon.”

When Ethan finally saw Claire, neither ran dramatically across a room.

They simply stared.

Two people robbed of two years.

Claire whispered:

“You married her.”

Ethan nodded.

“I thought you were dead.”

Tears filled Claire’s eyes.

“She told me you knew.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know that now.”

Ethan approached slowly.

“Can I hug you?”

Claire nodded.

He did.

And broke.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire pulled back.

“For what?”

“For believing everything.”

“You were grieving.”

“I still should’ve questioned more.”

“Maybe.”

That honesty mattered.

Then Maisie entered with Ethan’s sister.

Claire made a sound Ethan would never forget.

“Maisie.”

The little girl stared.

Claire crouched.

Did not grab her.

Did not demand recognition.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Maisie looked at Ethan.

Then at Claire.

Claire began crying.

Maisie slowly walked forward.

Still holding the stuffed rabbit.

She touched Claire’s cheek.

Then handed her the rabbit.

Claire sobbed.

Ethan turned away.

Not because he didn’t want to see.

Because he couldn’t breathe.

Later, Claire explained one final thing.

Corinne had begun hurting Maisie because the child kept pointing toward the cabinet.

Maisie had once watched Claire hide papers there before the crash.

She was too young then to understand.

But she remembered the cabinet.

Corinne feared that memory.

Ethan’s rage returned.

But Claire shook her head.

“No revenge.”

He looked at her.

“Then what?”

May you like

“Truth.”

👉 Claire was finally reunited with Maisie—but her testimony revealed Corinne’s cruelty escalated because the child remembered exactly where the hidden evidence was.
