Chapter 3 - Claire Was Looking Into the Camera
Ethan watched the video with Julia and Detective Reed.
Claire sat in a small room.
Pale.
Thinner.
But unmistakably alive.
She looked straight into the camera.
“If Ethan ever sees this, tell him I didn’t leave.”
Ethan covered his mouth.
Claire continued.
“I tried to contact him.”
Her voice shook.
“Corinne said he knew I survived.”
Ethan stared.
“She told Claire I knew?”
Detective Reed paused the recording.
“Keep watching.”
Claire explained that after the highway crash, she woke in a private medical clinic.
She had a head injury.
Confusion.
Memory problems.
A woman told her Ethan and Maisie were safe.
That woman was Corinne.
At first, Claire believed her.
Then Corinne began saying Ethan was furious.
That he blamed Claire for the crash.
That he wanted Maisie protected from her instability.
Claire tried calling Ethan.
The number Corinne gave her was disconnected.
She wrote letters.
Corinne promised to deliver them.
None arrived.
Then Claire discovered legal papers calling her “voluntarily separated from the family household.”
She refused to sign.
The video jumped.
Claire had recorded it secretly on someone else’s device.
She whispered:
“Corinne keeps asking me about the Carter estate.”
Ethan frowned.
The Carter estate?
His family had money.
But not enough to explain this.
Claire continued:
“She wants me to renounce something connected to Maisie.”
Ethan looked at Julia.
“What?”
Julia was already searching.
Claire finished:
“If anything happens to me, check Ethan’s father’s trust.”
The video ended.
Silence.
Ethan leaned back.
His father, Warren Carter, had died five years earlier.
Ethan inherited the house and several commercial properties.
He thought the estate was settled.
Julia did not.
She found a sealed trust amendment in county records.
One Ethan had never been shown.
It created a protected interest for Ethan’s first biological child.
Maisie.
At age one, Maisie became beneficiary of a controlling share in several family properties.
Ethan frowned.
“Why didn’t I know?”
“Someone filed for temporary administrative control after Claire’s death.”
“Who?”
Julia turned the laptop.
Corinne Carter.
Ethan stared.
The filing claimed Ethan was emotionally incapacitated after losing his wife.
Corinne, as “family representative,” received temporary authority over certain household and child-related assets.
Ethan remembered signing papers after Claire died.
He had no idea what half of them were.
His grief had become someone else’s opportunity.
Then Julia found a second name.
The attorney who prepared Corinne’s filings.
David Kessler.
Ethan knew him.
He had handled Claire’s funeral estate paperwork.
