Chapter 6 - Ryan Had Known Claire Was Alive
Ethan drove to Ryan’s house.
Julia insisted Detective Reed accompany him.
Good decision.
Ethan was furious.
Ryan opened the door.
Saw Ethan.

“You found the logs.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You knew my wife was alive.”
Ryan looked down.
“How long?”
“About a year.”
Ethan stepped forward.
Detective Reed moved between them.
Ryan raised his hands.
“I was trying to help her.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“By not telling me?”
“She begged me not to.”
That stopped him.
“Why?”
Ryan explained.
He first saw Claire by accident.
Margaret Vale sent him to Hawthorne Ridge with paperwork concerning the trust.
Ryan did occasional maintenance work for the foundation.
He had no idea who the patient was.
Then Claire walked into the room.

“I know that now.”
Ryan started helping Claire quietly.

He tried convincing her to contact Ethan directly.

“She thought you had chosen Corinne.”
Ethan’s face tightened.
“What?”
“Corinne showed her your wedding announcement.”
That hit hard.
Ethan and Corinne married thirteen months after Claire’s supposed death.
Claire saw the photo while still trapped in the lie.
“She thought I replaced her.”
Ryan nodded.
“She thought if she came back, you’d fight her for Maisie.”
Ethan turned away.
Corinne had built two separate realities.

Ryan continued.
Eventually Claire discovered enough trust records to understand what Corinne and Margaret were doing.
She planned to leave Hawthorne Ridge.

“Where did she go?”
“I don’t know.”
“You helped her disappear and don’t know?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
“Why?”
“To protect me.”
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Everyone keeps protecting everyone by lying.”
Ryan had no answer.
Then he handed Ethan an envelope.
Claire gave it to him nine months earlier.
“Why didn’t you give me this?”
“She said only if Corinne’s cabinet was opened.”
Ethan stared.
Claire knew about the cabinet.
Inside the envelope was a storage-unit key.
And a note.

If you found this, Maisie finally told you where Corinne hides things.
Ethan’s eyes filled.
Claire had somehow known Maisie was seeing more than adults realized.
The storage unit belonged to Claire.
Inside, according to the note, was “the proof Margaret cannot survive.”
Ethan looked at Ryan.
“What proof?”
Ryan shook his head.
“I never opened it.”
Ethan tightened his fist around the key.
Then Ryan said:
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“Claire stopped contacting me three months ago.”
Ethan froze.
“She disappeared again?”
“Yes.”
“And this time Corinne was already married to you.”
The implication was terrifying.
