Chapter 7 - Claire’s Storage Unit

The storage unit was small.

No furniture.

No clothes.

Just boxes.

Files.

A locked metal case.

And photographs.

Claire had been building a case.

One wall contained copies of trust transactions.

Names.

Dates.

Corporate filings.

Nothing dramatic individually.

Together, devastating.

Julia reviewed them.

Margaret Vale had managed the Carter foundation for twelve years.

During Warren Carter’s final illness, she gained unusual control over investment decisions.

Millions moved into redevelopment projects.

Several failed.

But fees continued flowing.

To companies connected to Margaret.

Corinne worked for one of those companies before she met Ethan.

Ethan stared at Julia.

“What?”

Corinne had always told him she met Claire at a charity event.

Not true.

She met Margaret first.

Corinne’s employment records showed she worked as Margaret’s executive assistant.

Then, six months before Claire’s “death,” Corinne suddenly appeared in Claire’s social circle.

Ethan felt cold.

“She was placed there.”

Julia wouldn’t assume intent.

But Claire had.

Her notes read:

Corinne didn’t become my friend accidentally.

Then Ethan opened the metal case.

Inside was a digital recorder.

Several memory cards.

And a notarized statement.

Claire’s statement.

She explained that she discovered Margaret’s trust scheme shortly before the highway accident.

She told Corinne.

Corinne offered to help.

Then the crash happened.

Claire wrote:

I no longer believe the accident itself was necessarily planned. I do believe what happened afterward was.

Important distinction.

Claire did not accuse without proof.

She said a second woman had died in the crash.

Her purse and identification were mistakenly placed with that woman during emergency response.

Corinne arrived before Ethan.

When hospital confusion created the false identification, Corinne did not correct it.

She exploited it.

Ethan stared at the page.

An administrative mistake became a disappearance because Corinne chose silence.

Then Corinne moved Claire under her maiden name to a private clinic.

Margaret funded everything.

Why?

Because Claire had the financial records.

They needed time to locate them.

But Claire had hidden copies.

In the storage unit.

Julia found the most important file.

An independent forensic audit Claire commissioned.

It showed approximately $6.4 million in questionable transfers connected to Margaret’s network.

Then another document.

A signed termination order Warren Carter had prepared before his death.

It removed Margaret from foundation control.

It was never filed.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

Corinne Hayes.

Corinne’s maiden name.

Ethan’s hands shook.

Corinne had witnessed Warren sign the document that would destroy Margaret’s authority.

Instead of filing it—

she buried it.

Then Detective Reed called.

They had located Margaret Vale.

She was preparing to leave the country.

Police stopped her at the airport.

But one item in her luggage changed the case.
