Chapter 2 - Claire’s Death Had Been Certified

Ethan called the police.
Then his attorney.
Then the hospital where Claire had supposedly died.
He did not confront Corinne further.
He had already learned something important.
When Corinne was cornered, she lied.
Better to let documents speak.
Maisie stayed with Ethan’s sister while investigators secured the cabinet.
The records inside were real.
That was the first shock.
The signature appearing to belong to Claire was real too.
At least according to preliminary comparison.
But so was Claire’s death certificate.
Ethan stared at both papers on his attorney’s desk.
“That’s impossible.”
Attorney Julia Sloan nodded.
“Which means one of these records may have been created using false information.”
Claire’s death certificate stated she died after a multi-car highway crash outside Portland.
Ethan remembered that night perfectly.
A state trooper at his door.
A hospital call.
Corinne beside him.
Corinne had been Claire’s closest friend then.
She helped with everything.
Funeral arrangements.
Insurance forms.
Maisie’s care.
Ethan had been shattered.
Six months later, Corinne moved into the house to “help.”
A year later, they married.
Julia asked:
“Did you personally see Claire after the accident?”
Ethan stopped.
“No.”
“Why?”
“The hospital advised against it.”
“Who told you that?”
Ethan knew before answering.
“Corinne.”
His stomach tightened.
He had accepted a closed casket because Corinne said Claire’s injuries were severe.
He had accepted cremation because Corinne said Claire had wanted it.
He had accepted almost everything because he could barely function.
Julia pulled the death file.
The body had been identified through personal effects and dental records.
But the dental comparison report was missing.
Ethan frowned.
“Can that happen?”
“It shouldn’t.”
Then investigators found something worse.
The hospital listed the deceased woman under Claire Carter’s name.
But the admission photograph did not match Claire.
Ethan stared at the blurred intake image.
Different jawline.
Different hair.
Similar height.
But not Claire.
His chest tightened.
“Who was she?”
Nobody knew yet.
Then Julia opened another document from Corinne’s cabinet.
A private psychiatric facility called Hawthorne Ridge.
Patient:
Claire Carter.
Admission date:
Eleven days after Claire’s “death.”
Ethan stood so fast his chair hit the wall.
“Where is this place?”
“Two hours north.”
“Is she there?”
Julia held up a hand.
“We verify before we assume.”
Ethan forced himself to sit.
Then his phone rang.
Detective Marcus Reed.
“We found something on the flash drive from the cabinet.”
Ethan gripped the phone.
“What?”
“A video.”
“Of Claire?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Fourteen months after she supposedly died.”
Ethan stopped breathing.

“And she says your name.”
👉 A hidden video confirmed Claire survived the crash—but what she said about Corinne would make Ethan question every day of the last two years.
