Chapter 11 - The Deed Beneath the Floorboards

Margaret began trembling again.

Ethan wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

“Mom, what did Dad leave you?”

She looked toward Victoria.

For months, fear had trained her to remain silent.

But Victoria no longer controlled the room.

Margaret took a slow breath.

“Your father bought land before Los Angeles expanded north.”

Ethan frowned.

His father had been a schoolteacher.

“He never sold it,” Margaret continued. “A developer offered to purchase it last year.”

“How much?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Twenty-eight million dollars.”

The guests stared at her.

Victoria’s jaw tightened.

Ethan finally understood.

His wife had not merely resented Margaret.

She needed her signature.

“Where is the deed?” he asked.

Margaret glanced toward the laundry room.

“Under the floorboard beneath the cot.”

Victoria suddenly ran.

Ethan caught her wrist before she reached the hallway.

He did not squeeze.

He simply held her in place.

“Let go of me!”

“Stop moving.”

Lauren and another guest hurried to the laundry room.

Beneath the cot, one floorboard had been recently loosened.

Inside was a plastic envelope.

The original deed was gone.

But Margaret had hidden a photocopy and a letter from her attorney.

Lauren brought them back.

The letter stated that no sale or transfer could occur without Margaret appearing personally before her attorney.

Victoria had forged documents.

But she still needed Margaret to complete one final verification.

That was why she kept her alive.

That was why she kept her weak.

That was why she created messages making Margaret believe Ethan had abandoned her.

Victoria wanted Margaret desperate enough to sign anything.

Ethan released his wife’s wrist.

She stepped backward, rubbing it dramatically.

“You have no proof I took the deed.”

Margaret looked at the bakery box beside her.

Then she remembered something.

“Your red shoes,” she whispered.

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

May you like

“The night you searched the room. Mud fell from your red shoes beneath the fountain.”

👉 Margaret had noticed one tiny detail that would lead Ethan directly to the stolen document.
