Chapter 17 - The Woman Who Returned Standing

Two weeks later, Margaret returned to the mansion.
She was still thin.
She still needed a cane.
But her hair was clean and softly curled.
She wore a lavender dress Ethan had bought with her, not for her.
Ruth, the dismissed nurse, walked beside her.
Lauren waited near the patio with copies of her videos.
Margaret’s attorney stood in the study.
Victoria was not there.
Her attorney had advised her to remain elsewhere while the evidence was preserved.
The laundry room door had been removed.
The cot was gone.
The camera had been sealed as evidence.
Margaret stepped onto the patio.
The dog kennel had also been removed, but the white bowl marked ROVER remained near the fountain.
She stared at it for a long moment.
Ethan moved to pick it up.
Margaret stopped him.
“No.”
She lifted it herself.
Her hands trembled, but not from hunger this time.
She carried the bowl to the trash and dropped it inside.
Then she turned toward the table where Victoria’s guests had once laughed.
All four women were there.
Two had come to apologize.
One could not meet Margaret’s eyes.
Lauren spoke first.
“I should have stopped it sooner.”
“Yes,” Margaret said.
Lauren swallowed.
“I was afraid of Victoria.”
“So was I.”
“I laughed before I understood.”
Margaret looked at her.
“You understood enough to record.”
Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.
“I am sorry.”
Margaret did not offer instant forgiveness.
But she nodded.
“Tell the truth when you are asked.”
“I will.”
The others agreed.
Margaret’s attorney opened the recovered deed.
The forged transfer had no legal value.
The land remained hers.
Her identity, property, and rights were secure.
But Margaret made one decision no one expected.
May you like
She refused to sell the land to the developer.
👉 Instead, she chose to use the property for the people Victoria had pretended to protect.
