Chapter 2 - Three Months of Silence

Only ninety minutes earlier, Ethan had been sitting in the back of a car returning from San Francisco.

His business trip had ended two days early.

He had told no one.

Margaret’s sixty-ninth birthday was that afternoon, and Ethan wanted to surprise her with the lemon cake she loved when he was a boy.

He imagined her laughing when she saw the red ribbon.

He imagined Victoria complaining that he had disrupted her garden party.

He never imagined finding his mother beside a dog kennel.

For the past three months, Margaret had sounded strange during their phone calls.

Her answers were short.

Her voice was always weak.

Whenever Ethan asked whether she was eating, resting, or attending her doctor appointments, Victoria would take the phone.

“She’s being dramatic again,” Victoria would say. “You know how your mother gets when she wants attention.”

Ethan believed her.

Margaret had moved into their guest suite after surgery left her unable to live alone.

Ethan traveled constantly.

Victoria promised to manage the nurses, medication, meals, and transportation.

Ethan transferred twelve thousand dollars every month for Margaret’s care.

He also paid the household staff separately.

Yet whenever he asked to speak to the nurse, Victoria claimed the woman had just left.

Whenever he requested receipts, Victoria said the accountant had them.

Whenever he tried to video call Margaret, the connection somehow failed.

Ethan had noticed the excuses.

But he had not yet understood them.

That afternoon, as his driver approached the mansion, Ethan saw unfamiliar luxury cars lining the street.

Music drifted from the backyard.

Victoria had told him she was hosting “a small charity lunch.”

Ethan smiled and stepped out with the cake.

He entered through the side gate so no one would see him.

The first thing he heard was laughter.

The second was his wife’s voice.

“Show us how grateful you are, Margaret.”

Then Ethan raised his phone and began recording before he stepped into view.

👉 What he heard next explained why Margaret had been too afraid to ask her own son for help.
