Chapter 7 - The Camera Victoria Forgot

Ethan removed the memory card from the small camera.

Victoria stepped forward.

“That is private property.”

He looked at her.

“My mother’s confinement is not private property.”

“You’re being dramatic.”

Lauren let out a disbelieving laugh.

Victoria turned on her.

“You were laughing ten minutes ago.”

Lauren’s face tightened.

“I didn’t know what you were doing.”

“You recorded it.”

“So did you.”

The words landed hard.

Ethan looked toward the guests.

“Who has video?”

No one answered.

Victoria moved between them.

“Delete everything. Now.”

One woman immediately lowered her phone.

Lauren did not.

“I backed mine up.”

Victoria’s expression changed.

For the first time, real panic appeared.

“You had no permission.”

Lauren raised her chin.

“Neither did Margaret.”

Ethan inserted the memory card into a laptop in his study.

The files covered nearly two months.

Hundreds of short recordings.

Many had no sound.

Some had been deleted.

But the camera automatically preserved motion-triggered clips in a hidden folder.

Ethan opened the oldest file.

Margaret appeared healthy, walking slowly into the room.

Victoria followed her inside.

“You’ll stay here until you learn not to interfere in my marriage,” she said.

The next clip showed Victoria removing Margaret’s phone.

Another showed her taking away a meal tray untouched.

Another showed Margaret knocking on the door at night.

The final clip showed Victoria standing outside the room as Margaret begged for water.

“I’ll bring it when you stop calling Ethan,” Victoria replied.

The room went silent.

Ethan closed the laptop.

Victoria’s voice cracked.

“She was trying to turn you against me.”

Ethan stared at her.

May you like

“No. She was trying to survive you.”

👉 But when Ethan demanded Margaret’s missing phone, Victoria revealed how far she had gone to control every message leaving the house.
