Chapter 14 - Margaret Speaks

Margaret sat in the living room wearing Ethan’s suit jacket over her torn robe.

A doctor Ethan trusted arrived and examined her privately.

Margaret was dehydrated, malnourished, and physically exhausted.

But she was alert.

She knew exactly where she was.

She understood every question.

The doctor documented everything.

Victoria watched from across the room.

Her face became tighter with every note he wrote.

When the examination ended, Ethan knelt beside his mother.

“I need to know what you want.”

Margaret looked toward the French doors.

Outside, the cake box remained on the patio.

Its red ribbon fluttered in the evening breeze.

“I want to leave this house.”

“You will.”

“I want my phone back.”

Ethan placed it in her hand.

“I want Ruth to know I never fired her.”

Ruth was the nurse Victoria had dismissed.

“I’ll call her.”

Margaret’s fingers closed around the phone.

Then she looked at Victoria.

“And I want her to hear me.”

Ethan did not interrupt.

Margaret slowly rose.

For months, Victoria had forced her to lower her eyes.

This time, Margaret stood directly in front of her.

“You told me my son was ashamed of me.”

Victoria said nothing.

“You told me he wanted me hidden.”

Still nothing.

“You fed me lies until I believed I had no one.”

Victoria crossed her arms.

“You were always too dependent on him.”

Margaret’s voice strengthened.

“No. You were afraid of what love looks like when it cannot be purchased.”

Victoria laughed bitterly.

“You think Ethan will spend the rest of his life taking care of you?”

Margaret glanced at her son.

“No. I think he will spend the rest of his life knowing I never stopped loving him.”

Ethan’s eyes filled with tears.

Victoria looked away first.

Then Margaret delivered the sentence Victoria feared most.

“I will testify about everything.”

👉 Margaret had reclaimed her voice, but Ethan still had one final truth to reveal about the mansion Victoria believed she controlled.
